Hi,
My 2016 A45 recently went into the dealers for a fault relating to SOS not ready.
A software update was required which then resulted in car play not working, the menu has disappeared.
Took it back to dealers for investigation, they have said it was not fitted with car play from new and have checked the data card which confirms this.
They have advised that it had somehow been retrofitted after it left the factory and they are unable to put it back on without replacing the head unit.

Does anyone have any advice on this please?

Currently at a stand-off with the dealer as they broke it and now refusing to fix it.

You have just tripped over the problem of retrofit functionality being added to a car without the Data Card being updated: as soon as a dealer applies a software update, the retrofit functionality is lost.

In the dealer’s defence, they would have had no idea that a “dodgy” update had been carried out on the car to add CarPlay, and there’s no way they could have applied the software update to fix the SOS system if they had known and you insisted they didn’t delete CarPlay.

My only suggestion would be to contact COMAND Online and see if they can provide you the update which won’t get deleted again as they always update the Data Card when they carry out retrofits.

Have you had the car from new, if so you would know for certain that it came with CarPlay. Which would mean dealers have a case to answer.

If you bought it used, did you or previous owner had CarPlay retrofitted, and not added to the data card, then as St13phil has said, the said dealer has not broken it, as in their eyes it was not on the car officially. In this case you would have to have it retrofitted again, and to ensure it’s added onto the data card, for this scenario not to occur again.

Thanks for the reply.

The car play was on the car when I bought it so didn’t know it had been added at some point.
If I got command online to do the update, would this be classed as a MB approved retrofit, as my dealer has said that any software updates not carried out by MB would void the MB warranty?

If it is acceptable, why much would this cost?

Is there not anything the dealer can do like command online can?

If the Data Card is updated then as far as any dealer is concerned, that’s how the car came out of the factory.

Regarding cost, you’ll have to talk to COMAND Online. Oh, and dealers don’t offer retrofits unless MB actually sell it as a kit.

Lots of ACP aftermarket options for loads of vehicles so maybe someone had it retrofitted and now with a software update it has possibly wiped any of the required Carplay coding.

If it was not fitted from factory (was it even available on a `17 car) then how can MB be responsible for re-installing it when it shouldn`t have been there in the first place and isn`t even on the vehicles data-card ?

Most aftermarket ACP units use an external box wired into the headunit , it may be worth a look to see if you can find it as it wont be too far from the headunit , there maybe a supplier name or contact details so you could get in touch with them to re-install the software.

If it is an aftermarket part then MB (or any manufacturer) wont update the factory datacard to include the mod.
