W201 first facelift, real benefits?

Out of interest, what was your fathers name on the forum?

I don't know but his name was Raymond English, he may have used that or RW English. He died 7 or 8 years ago, would probably have been a member for about 10 years before that. He started off with the W123 type cars, had a couple of diesel estates (230TE??). First one LHD I think from Belgium. Then he bought a classic sports convertible, roughly an 84 model I think. Back to a 230 estate, then a 190 estate. After that a very smart very large V8 coupe which he claimed he couldn't insure for me to drive! After that he considered the A class mini SUV but decided on a supercharged coupe/hatchback C Class Kompressor I think. That was his last car, still driving it at 91.

@KillerHERTZ - you any idea?

Just checked, he died in November 2018 and had been using the email
[email protected]

He wasn't great with IT at his age, so most probably was not on the forum, but seemed rather proud to be a club member and loved the magazines. Once I own a 190e, I will join too. Well, might join before but it seems silly to do so yet.

Ahhh, the "other" forum. Glad we are being of help to you on here. And in return, your posts will help others!

Amongst other things, serious structural rust was what finished my 21 years with a 190e. At 26 years old as it was going to fail the next MOT for sure. It did fail in the hands of the new owner but as a garage mechanic he had the resources to repair it at reasonable cost and get it back on the road. It still has a valid MOT now 10 years on.

The areas of concern have been mentioned but I actually blame the thick underseal for the problem. Fine when it's integrity is 100 % but once water gets behind it the rust develops unseen until it's too late to treat it without welding in new metal. Once rust did become visible and you started peeling back the underseal, it could be seen that the rust had already traveled some distance behind what appeared to be a sound surface. Without underseal the rust would have been readily seen at an annual inspection and and could have been treated to keep it in check.

Thanks, yes underseal has good and bad aspects for sure

Ah thanks. Whatever it was then, it looked like one!

Mercedes never actually made an estate version of the W201 190 , although it was mooted , along with a coupe and cabriolet , each of which prototypes were made but never went into production.

Prior to the introduction of the W123 estates , the first official MB estate , estates were modified cars made by specialists such as Binz or IMA , who also built ambulances, hearses and other specialist vehicles based on M-B cars , back in the days of Pontons and Fintails Mercedes would supply these coachbuilders with part built cars missing most of the rear body shell .

Besides the W123 and W124 estates , the first smaller estate Mercedes made officially was the W202 , the first model known as the C Class , but these came as C180 , C200 and C220 , there was never a C190 estate .

Thanks, my mistake then. I remembered it as one, but looking at some up for sale, it must have been the W124 estate. Make sense after him enjoying a couple of 123s

Couple of nice honest looking old cars for sale on ebay at the moment. No ac in either of them and both have sunroofs but very original looking cars none the less. The sort of cars you could put a few thousand into and not loose any money on imo. May be of interest.
A 1987 190e 2.0 pre facelift
And a 1989 w124 230e pre facelift

Thanks yes, and there is a 30k mile stunner in Penryn. But at present I am fixated on Behr A/C and no sunroof (so probably Japanese import). Am trying not to be impatient!
