Hi, I'm completely new to W201s, had a look at a lovely 1992 model, but underneath the passenger floor mat there was a kind of tray/panel (plastic?), so I couldn't see the actual metal floor. I didn't pay much attention at the time, but now I'm fretting about it hiding rust or worse. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

It's 8 years since I owned a 1989 W201 so don't take this a gospel. My recollection is that it's just a false floor hiding cables. If you are concerned about structural rust, the real place to look at is the rear suspension mounts and jacking points.

You're exactly right, thanks, I've had it confirmed as a false floor covering the cables.

The underfloor plastic panel in w201's just clips in at the front and back so is easy to remove if needs be. You can get a good idea if there is any rust issues in the floorpan area by opening the jacking point covers on a facelift sacco panel w201 and having a root around. The inner sills on w201's are inboard so not exposed to road salt etc.

If they are clean at the rear jacking points and rear subframe mounts , they are likely to be good everywhere else .
