I would appreciate any help here. C180 1997 62k miles. The car starts ok from cold and then within a few seconds or so the revs climb to about 1200rpm. The engine then hunts and pops like small backfires until it warms a liitle a few minute later and returns to 700rpm. The car then drives smoothly and is ok. During the hunting there is smell of fuel from the exhaust.

I have cleaned the throttle body and the air filter is new. The air sensor is clean and looks ok.

Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks

Well it did not get any replies so perhaps its an unusual event? Anyway if anyone does want to know its now solved. It was a sticking valve at start up and resolved with cleaning fluid sprayed in to the air intake. My garage sorted it in minutes. Happy days.

What cleaning fluid did they use ?

hummmm a sticky inlet valve?
