Hi Guy's,

Well I'm finally back in the fold! Yesterday I purchased a rather sorry looking 2000 C200 Classic Selection.

Can anyone tell me anything about this model of W202?

Today I hope to clean and polish her up then I will be able to see what really needs to be sorted.

I will post pictures later.

Cheers,

Simon

Congratulations on the new purchase Simon. From memory the Classic Selections where a handfull of W202's near the end of production that had a few extras above the standard Classic models such as alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel. A member on here has a Classic selection and im sure he will fill you in on any other bits I may have missed.

That'll be me (C200 CS Tip Auto), or penfold who also has one (his is a C220 CDI manual).

gurpz is on the right track, let me know if I can help with more details.

Ok, So I picked up the car today and it drives really well. I bought it without any service history and incorrect mileage (dealer speak I guess)

Anyway while checking the car over I found the Service history down the side of the passenger seat! Result!

The history confirms a mileage of 75k - The Odemeter has missing pixels hence the lack of mileage warrenty. Howerver the MOT's back up the mileage.

The engine is smooth, as is the auto gearbox, and the Aircon is even cold...

Overall what I thought was going to be a complete dog and cheap runnner is turning out to be a semi decent car.

Pics to follow at some point...

So pleased for you, and it does sound good and low miles, do try and take some pics before and after, we love pictures on here :):)

Nice car mate and not a bad spec either. Have noticed that your clusters in a right state. If im correct you have got a lot of blown bulbs too such as the clock and a few in the row next to the milliage. As for the scrambled read outs there caused by bad connectors IIRC. If your feeling confident you can whip out the cluster and see whats what and how many bulbs need replacing.

Looks like it should be a good runner. As mentioned above the displays could be dodgy connections (the push in, flat, ribbon cables in the cluster Vectra's used to have problems that had the same effect - strip, clean and re-assemble was the fix).

The radio's the same as mine (but no wood) - is that just co-incidence or were these factory fit?

Matches well dont it :D

Pioneer and Kenwood used to do special wooden face models back in the days.

I think that its the bulbs that require replacing as I can see the rest of the read out when looking closer.

Anyone ever changed the bulbs? my concern is that after attemping the replacment I will loose the lovely squeek and rattle free car...

I do love my 202 at the moment.

People think the 124 was the best of the last great MB's...the 202 is surely in the running

I have to agree. Currently I have the following cars to choose from;

2001 Boxster S
2006 Seat Toledo TDI DSG
2005 Peugeot 407 HDI
2000 W202 Classic Selection

And for me it's the W202, the build quality is a cut above all of them.
And as for smoothness - Move over new fangled DSG! rubbish!

Nice looking car Simon, you'll have that up to scratch in no time

Out of interest, was it an auction purchase? Only reason I ask is because of the barcode in the windscreen :)

How many points for observation do I get :D

Your good, now together with my location and knowing that it comes from an Auction house you should be able to find out how much I paid for it......

Seamster, I have pulled out the promotional sheet the dealers issued for the Classic Selection and taken pics of each side - hopefully it's just about readable enough for you to identify the additional features over the standard Classic.

The radio's the same as mine (but no wood) - is that just co-incidence or were these factory fit?

As per the second promotional sheet, the standard fit on the CS was a Stage 1 Radio Upgrade - as I recall this was still a Radio Cassette. I opted for the (Stage 2?) upgrade to a single CD player. It's a Blaupunkt Sevilla as pictured. Nearly went for the auto changer but budget wouldn't allow it. I don't know if your Kenwood was one of the options.

Have you found any corrosion under the wheel arches etc, that might be covered by the MB warranty?

He has some at the corner on that bump at the rear but that wont be covered as they will say its caused by the bump....unless the bump is repaired they may never know

Yeah, the W202 shares so much with the W124, it was the last 'Box'y Merc' aswell.
