Has anyone done this DIY?, would be handy to hear from someone who has, as it seems a bit of a small thing to bother taking it to a garage for.
Where abouts are they located on the 220 cdi?.
Take off the plastic engine cover and all will be revealed to the left of the oil filter housing.
Ideally you need a 1/4" drive torx socket, failing that you can carefully use a 6 sided hex socket. I found the 3/8" drive extension/torx socket a little bit awkward to get in. Be careful not to dislodge any of the plastic fuel lines. Removing the oil filter housing also makes the job a lot easier.
Replacing the thermostat is quite easy but you might find as I did that you have to disturb the plastic fuel pipes to get at it. Dependant on age these go brittle and snap.....a simple job soon turned into a larger job for me

Exactly the same thing happened to me on my 270cdi (part number for my fuel pipe was A6120703232). probably ended up costing me £250 in parts and time. Those pipes are very close to the aux belt. I see that the seller of my replacement pipe typically sells 3-4 of these per month, so it is a very fragile thing, and everytime I get in the car I wonder if it will be the last.
A simple check.
If the big diameter hose from the thermostat to the top of the radiator feels to be warm within 5 minutes of the engine starting from cold ;
the thermostat is faulty.
