Hi all. I was wondering if I could ask everyone’s sage advice.

When I bought the w203 (2006 c220 cdi), the previous owner said that the alternator pulley needed changed. Now I don’t have the tools to take the pulley off, so o was just going to replace the complete alternator with a refurbished one. I’ve found one that is for an e320 from the same year for a really good price. Could someone let me know if this will fit or if I should keep looking

Many thanks!

Why not just ask a local garage to change the pulley?

If your alternator is working then there is no need to change it.

Also a 320 CDI probably has an alternator with a higher output, possibly different fittings and may have a different electrical plug.

Have you checked to see if he part numbers are the same?

Would it just be a case that I buy the pulley and ask the mechanic if he can change it? I use the car daily but if it were a relatively quick job, I could definitely go down that route

Ask your local garage.
It should be a quick job.

A local alternator specialist may also be able to help.

The tool is available from Sealy for approx £25.00 and the pulley is about £30.00 The pulley can be changed without removing the alternator.

Really? That would be so much handier than having to remove the alternator! I’ll look into this now folks. Many thanks 👍

Good evening all! I had just ordered the pulley remove kit today (thank you for your advice!!) but while browsing the forum, it mentioned about bringing up the voltage on the dash. When not started, the battery was sitting at around 12.4v. It started fine and then when I observed the voltage with the engine on, it went up to 14.4 - 14.5v. There are another few niggles I’m sorting. But I wondered, if the alternator pulley was gone, surely it wouldn’t charge the battery to the appropriate levels as stated on the display? Or are there other elements that need factored in?

As long as the alternator is driven at the appropriate speed it will provide charge.

Why are you wanting to change the pulley?

Is it noisy or not running true?

Being honest, I was changing it because the previous owner had said it needed changed. Although when I listened, it sounded fine (to my untrained ear!!) and it looks to be running true! I dunno if he had received bad advice from his mechanic or was just masking the other problems by saying it wasn’t charging the battery right 🤔
