My automatic W203 has developed a funny noise when the brake pedal is released, it sounds like a high pitched whine rather that a squeak, it feels like it could be an audible warning alarm. It goes off after a while or if I tap the brake pedal again. Any ideas anyone?

Parking brake return spring sounds plausible.

It seems unrelated to the park brake, it's definitely the normal foot brake...

It sounds like it's coming from above the brake pedal, it starts when I release the brake pedal, it stops if I dab the brake pedal again. It does actual sound like a low volume high pitched alarm... but it does seem to be centered around the brake pedal.

What's the fix with that then, does it need replacing or repairing. Can I do it myself? How much will it cost?

That's what I'm asking Miro. Is it the kind of thing I can fix/replace myself or will it need to go to the garage?

I came across this article as I was browsing (as you do)

Complaint
When the depressed brake pedal is released, a squeaking or whistling noise can occasionally be heard.

Cause

The whistling noise is produced in the brake booster. It is caused when the brake pedal is released when the working and vacuum chambers in the brake booster are connected together. Pressure equalization occurs between the two chambers, with air flowing from the working chamber into the vacuum chamber.

In the process, the air flows around an edge, which produces vortices. These vortices can be heard as a whistling noise if tolerances are unfavorable.

Remedy

Replace brake booster.

The brake booster has been modified to prevent this whistling noise from occurring.

Perhaps it may help

Hi Joe, That certainly sounds like it may be the problem. Do you know how hard it is to replace the brake booster or how much it is likely to cost at the garage? Thanks for you help in advance.

Brakes, airbags and horns are a no go zone for DIY. It is much too dangerous if you make a mistake. Make sure you take it to a garage.

I have a new W203 booster in hand. Let me know if you need it.

Have the replacing of the brake booster resolve your problem?
I have the same problem.

Welcome Olympuss.

Did you get the fault codes read with STAR (or iCarsoft)?
