W203 coupe parcel shelf rattle

Hi I have a c220 cdi evo panaroma se auto coupe. The parcel shelf on it constantly rattles, but when it is removed there is golden silence. I spoke to the main dealer and he says a new parcel shelf is required at £205 plus vat.

Has anyone come across this before or have a cheaper fix. They say it is something to do with the cord springs, but I can not see how this stops it rattling when tailgate closed.

You can strip these down, anyone know where to get replacement springs? these seem to be the problem as they have stretched.

Could you not use sticky backed foam ?? It works on bedroom doors anyway..........

maybe try a stip of dynamat extreme - it is adhesive on one side but will add to the weight of the shelf potentially stopping the noise?
Not sure - just an idea?

Thanks, I have heard of that never gave it a thought that should work. I have put weight on top of shelf and that stops noise. Thanks again with fingers crossed

Finally decided that I can not stand the rattle everything else has failed. Went back to dealer to order a new parcel shelf. I was served by a different bloke who said "do you know they do a repair kit for these?" It is only £11 +vat per side. That is strange when I enquired at same garage before they told me they did not do a repair kit.!

Hi, part no PMA2036900095. They are called followers. It did not cure rattle though. They are the string bits, which thinking about it does not do anything to rattle. I made the mistake of thinking that a mercedes dealer knew what they are talking about!

I stuck some foam insulating tape down each side of the rear sills that the parcel shelf rests on. This has dramatically reduced the amount of noise it makes going over bumps. Not pretty, but it’s a cheap and easy fix.
