Anyone help me with this a mate of mine is disillusioned with diesels and has decided to go back to Petrol and he is looking at a W204 C180 Sport.

Does anyone have any info on these in real world conditions i.e. mpg, any issues etc.

He does a very similar commute to me around 90 miles per day and the above car combined MPG is above 40 mpg is this possible? (No good asking me as I always get or beat the manufacturers figures)

I believe the C180 CGI replaced the 180 Kompressor engine so are these units now N/A or do they still feature a Kompressor or Turbo?

Any info on petrol engined W204's would be most appreciated.

Kindest regards
Ian

The new C class C180 engine is a direct petrol injection turbocharged engine. They are notable for having a broad range of torque across the rev range and are a much smoother and quieter engine than the kompressor engine. They get their economy from the direct injection of course. No problems with DPF's either! They can evidently be persuaded to yield another 30HP and a lot more torque relatively easily.;) Mercedes already produce such an engine in the new C200 CGI but they don't appear to sell that in the UK only the more powerful C250CGI ???

Manufacturers figures are 42mpg (combine - manual) and 40mpg (auto)

Achievable I imagine, only an 1800cc turbo engine, 156bhp, 250Nm torques.....

he will prob average about 38mpg if he takes it easy on the drive.

I really like the CGI engines, feels like youre driving a tractor going back to a diesel.

Don't know if this is true with everyone but I have always found that I can get close to or sometimes better than the official figures with any car that I have owned when driving carefully but when being a bit more enthusiastic with my driving style petrol mpg plummets and diesel mpg goes down much less in percentage terms. So for me personally a "real world" scenario involving long term averages, petrol would always lose out more to the official figures than diesel.

For me this is the most significant reason for having diesel over petrol.

That's my thoughts exactly, the Volvo will be the last diesel I own too unless circumstances change before I swap next year.

I haven't tried one of the new MB turbo petrols.

I could be convinced, or I might just go balls out and buy a E500 212 whenever the time goes.

I am sure in a C class a 1.8T is great, but in an E class, too lacking grunt. Needs a 6 or a V8.

Low miles V8 E500s are making nearly new 2nd hand cars very tempting if I had £40k to spend.

my V8 dream comes ever so close by each passing day..

I have a new C180 CGI auto. It averages between 40 and 44 mpg on the motorway. Round town it can go down to 25 mpg.

Over 3000 miles it has averaged 30.5 mpg with about a 50/50 mix town / motorway.

(All taken from the trip computer).
