Bought a used c-class everything is going great but... Quick question have just found a fair bit of water in the boot well where the spare wheel lives...Where is the likely source of the water/leak? I have checked both light clusters and wiring and seems dry in there as does all the carpeted area in the whole upper boot. :/

Also ran my finger around all boot seals and can't feel anything, most of the water is collected in the plastic base of the boot well and a bit is found on the a few inches up on the right hand side where the carpet cover sits on top of..Any ideas?

Just to clarify i have checked all wiring and light clusters after finding various posts on google with people have a leak in the rear light cluster and burning out the wiring loom. Everything seems as good as new.

The only way you're going to find the leak is to get someone to shut you and a torch in the boot and get them to use a pressure hose on the outside of the car.

Just make sure they're trustworthy first ;)

i think that i have solved this problem if you open the filler cap you will see a drain hole for the over spill of fuel this pipe has some how become disconnected in the boot/trunk when it rains the water collects in the fuel filler cap and then makes it way in to the boot/trunk down this pipe I found this after dismantling all of the trim in the boot/trunk with the help of my son and the garden hose we found the problem i hope that this helps someone with the same problem and save them them some time

Iv tried finding my way to the inside of the filler cap but can't get all the trim off so now I'm totally stuck:/...Not sure its coming from there anyway. Dried it all off and after last nights rain have found a new puddle (car is parked on dead flat surface)....Its in the bottom right hand corner (closest to boot lid and light cluster) its on the level below the fuse box so underneath the floor...but above the level of the spare wheel well....Can anyone help me with a likely cause please?

The water leak in the W204 boot is deliberate. It's to extinguish any electrical fires…

If i don't get this leak plugged there will be an electrical fire. Bit to close to wiring for my liking :/

Bizarrely, because of having long ago been the tortured owner of a Reliant Scimitar GTE6, I've been able to help a couple of people who had water ingress in the boot area in Mercs, one in Norfolk and one in Melbourne, Aus.

This may not be your problem, but there are drainage tubes under the car at the back which are meant to drain rainwater. These often get blocked. They basically look like clear tubes and are commonly positioned behind the rear wheels. Have you checked these?

Hi, I don't suppose you've gotten to the bottom of this have you? Same issue on my 08 estate.

Thanks!

Hi, my car have similar leak (floor near the fusebox). After some check, managed to figure out that the water leak through the boot vent (located near the fusebox in the boot). I applied some silicon around the boot vent and the problem solved. You may check whether your boot vent is secured properly to the side wall of the car before any fix.

To simulate the leak, just pour water around the rear light clutter while the boot is open, you will notice water start leaking into the boot through the boot vent if you have similar problem.

Alternative way is get a replacement part like the following:

Water ingress / leak c lass estate

Hi,

I have a c class estate just over 2 years old and it's got a water ingress in the boot where the spare tyre is. Phoned the main dealer to asked for repair but was told that diagnostic is chargeable. So I've asked them to check if it's covered under warranty as it's just over 2 year old. They have then came back to me saying that if it's the vents that's causing the leak, I will be charged 1 hour diagnostics and given a quote on top of the diagnostics charge for a repair.
Does anyone know if the vents are covered under warranty Just in case the diagnostics comes out as vent failure? I've booked it in for Friday, so would be great if anyone can advise prior to Friday please.

Many thanks.

My previous 2010 S204 was just on 3 years old when I got it and came with an additional MB warranty (4th year). I found a small amount of water in the spare well and the main dealer where I got it from checked and fixed under the warranty. It indeed was the vents and they replaced both FOC and I never had any further problems. (That was in September 2013).

Hi Phil,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. They were a bit cheeky saying that if it's the vents, it wouldn't be covered as the vents won't fail unless it's broken due to an accident. But I will try to speak to them again.

Kind regards

Hi, Mercedes garage had a look and made an educated guess saying it might be the non-genuine tow bar that was fitted as this model doesn't normally leak.. And charged me a minimal amount of labour as it was not a full strip down investigation. It seemed fair enough if it's really the tow bar. Just thought whilst I was driving back that it shouldn't be the tow bar if the sound damper on the passenger side is wet (as it's above the bumper). I then put my finger under the vents where the rubber seal is, and found water.. Found more on the passenger side than the driver side. I was wrong thinking that buying a car under warranty would cover me for any issues! Phoned the service person an hour ago and left a message for them to ring me but still no sign of a phone call.. Feeling a bit disappointed.
