Hi guys,

Looking to buy a new c class soon or 335d x drive. Both have very good discount available on them at the moment.

To be honest, I'm not too bothered about how fast the car is, but the 335d has 10k off list at the moment but I do prefer the Mercedes looks and interior.

I do about 10k a year, what engine would you guys recommend go for?

I originally was thinking 250d then reading that that engine is not that refined and has a lot of the diesel clatter.

Would appreciate your views/recommendations.

Thankyou

I've an s205 250 and there is some clatter but I wouldn't say a lot. It is definitely noticeable on occasion, it is a bit of a common theme with 4 cylinders though, why they don't do a 6 cylinder in uk i don't know.

I have a W205 C250 and find the engine noise acceptable.

I suggest you test drive one and judge for yourself.

There is a new modular range of MB petrol engines in development at present 3,4,6 cylinder in-line engines. They may put in an appearance in the new E class and possibly in a revised W205 in the future.

This why I will move to 335d BMW for my wife after our C320 CDI. I'm really annoyed there is no 6 cylinder diesel C class.

BMW are discontinuing the 6cyl too the new generation 3 and 5 series will be twin or triple turbo 4 pots depending on model. Engine weight of the 6 cyls is just too high to fit the new platforms

Don't let the 25% discount on the bimmer sway you - thats the standrd discount on the bigger engines models, and has been for over a year. Just reflects the markets view of the MRRP across the range, but especially the upper models.

Hard to know what compares in the C class, but a similar discounted outlay would only get you into a c250d sport premium, which neither has the power nor the all weather ability of the xdrive 3. Question of what you really need and whether the extra available from BMW at the same money is of interest.

You could save £1200 by going for the slightly slower 330d with s drive, but if I was spending £30k I think I'd be spending £31k for the top model too!

Thanks guys, it's a really hard choice as I do love the looks and interior of the c class.

How about the C200 petrol? Must be more refined than the d.

I've just been through exactly the same as this the new c class is a dog if a drive and whats with the stick on iPad infotainment the interior is something you expect in a Kia and fake exhaust outlets tacky or what

Beemer interior is even worse cheap plastics, poor seats but better engines than the codes class

In the end I bought the new VW Golf R 250bhp petrol + 100bhp electric motor. The reason didn't want a diesel with SCR or a diesel at all but as a high miler wanted something that did over 45 mpg. The Golf fitted the bill perfect fantastic build quality much better than both the MB and Beemer and more power and faster for less money. Only snag I have to wait until February fiwr delivery but mine will be the first in the UK

What golf? Also the interior in the merc is very nice place to be.

New Golf R not available in the UK yet, bought it in Germany in September. Currently driving a Golf GTD whhich is a better place to be inside than the C class. The thing that kills the interior for me is that stick on ipad type infotainment screen I hate it, it ruins the aesthetics of the car. I would never buy a car with one of those which also the beemer has and was one of the reasons I went VW, 8.5" OLED screen totally integrated into the dash, replicated between the dials and even a HUD.:bannana:

Lol there is no new golf R yet

C200 petrol and then remap to 250bhp would be my choice.

I picked up my C 200 Petrol last Wednesday. Bloody hell what a car.

All the UK magazine reviews comment on the C Class weakness being their noisy unrefined diesel engines yet I can't find any UK reviews on the petrol version. Well all I can say is have a look at a few Australian reviews where petrol is king as there are plenty of reviews of the C200.

The C 200 petrol has the pulling power of the diesel with a 0-60 of 7.3 seconds and boy is this car quiet. I hate engine noise and I hate noisy clattering diesels. This car is wafting me around in near silence. All I will say is test drive the petrol version.

As for MPG? To early to say yet but my 99 miles drive home along mainly motorway but out of a town centre with an 18 mile section of 50 MPH speed limit showed the car returning 54 MPG and that on a car with a tight engine, which had a mileage of only 12 miles when I picked it up.

Finally while the C250 is 0.7 seconds quicker to 0-60 that 0.7 seconds costs an extra £3665 list. Well it was a no brainer for me!

Yeah a few of the German reviews are saying real world it is around 10% worse economy wise than the diesel, and such a sweet engine.

thegetawayer on youtube has given it, well in 250 tune, a glowing review. Well worth a watch for anyone considering one.
