my car runs fine on small throttle openings, when the pedal is pressed further the car is hesitant, it changes down, moves, then revs up with no drive and it feel like its running on four cylinders, if I back off the throttle it seems to compose itself and speed up. I've taken off the MAF and cleaned it which made a slight improvement, the gearbox oil level is OK. Any ideas?

I had exactly the same symptoms with my CLK320. It turned out to be the MAF sensor. £105 later......job done.

MAF sensor?

Hello Andrew here from The Netherlands. I also have the same problem now for a while. I first replaced he Lambasonde (CO sensor) did get any better results. I have bought a (non OEM) MAF sensor and replaced this one for the (org OEM) MAF sensor... but it killed the motor after a couple honderd meters. When i put the (org OEm) MAF sensor on it, it started without a problem and the Old Defect came back. So you think its the MAF sensor?????

Exactly the same problem on my E55. Changed the MAF and problem fixed.
Make sure you get an OEM one though.

Hallo Andrew, I bought a £34 MAF from Ebay to try, as at that price I had nothing to loose, It sorted the car out, apart from some slight hesitantsy in the gearbox to change down when putting my foot down. I may buy a Bosch unit to see if that helps, they seem to be available (on ebay) from around £120.
