W209 CLK240 parking brake adjustment

Bit more good luck. Took the car to the garage next door for them to potentially overhaul the parking brake. Turns out someone had already been in there, everything fairly new but just the star adjuster was jammed tight with the shoes off the hub. Released, adjusted, lubed and good to go. Might buy a lottery ticket.

Not the cable then . Good news 😁.

Great result , as you now know this can be a big job.

Does make you wonder what kind of muppet assembles the star adjuster without putting suitable lube in the turn barrel ? The kit I used even had a small sachet of it included .

Hoof a can of brake cleaner through every orifice you can into into the drum and give it a good seeing to with a soft mallet. it might loosen thing up . But sooner or later you are going to have to replace the lot.

I did my own by cutting the new back plates in a particular manner so I did not have to remove the hubs . It's not ideal, but many garages refuse to do that and will insist on removing the hubs which can turn a stupid handbrake fix into an expensive one.

Your call.
Hi, sorry to revive an old thread. I'm having to replace my back plates, trying to do it myself and don't have the means to remove bearings. Could you explain how/where to cut the plate. I don't see a way that it would ever fit over the hub.
Thanks

Have a look on YouTube, there are videos. I did it a few years back but can’t remember where the cut went.

It's not pretty but it works. I obviously cleaned up all the cuts and resprayed the plates (with many layers of paint) . I also ran some butyl seal strip on the exposed cut .

Cutting like this retains the fixing points on the plate and , more importantly keeps the flat surface that the brake shoes rest on.

That's very helpful, thanks so much. Really didn't want to pay a garage!
Thanks everyone
