W210 CD Changer not working

My 2001 E280 estate has the original Audio 10 Radio/Cassette with the fibre optic 6 disc CD changer in the boot, however it has never been able to play a CD since I've owned the car; whenever I press the 'CD' button it always comes up with the message 'No CD', regardless of whether the CD changer is actually plugged in or has any CDs in the magazine.

There is definitely power getting to the changer as I can eject the magazine without any problems. I have also checked the fibre cable and there is a red light coming through at both ends of the cable, so this appears to be intact and both the head unit and changer seem to be trying to communicate.

I have inserted the magazine with two CDs loaded, however nothing seems to happen after this; the changer never seems to make any attempt to load any discs from the magazine regardless of which buttons are pressed on the head unit.

I'm not sure whether the head unit or the changer is at fault?

Mine gave up the ghost years ago - I took it out and use the space for storage. iPod/iPhone on a 3.5mm M-M headphone cable into the glovebox AUX is all the CDs I'll ever need.

That seems to be the consensus, I'd like to get the changer working though.

I had mine for 7 years...it never worked.
