W210 E-Class Comand Removal-How to?

Hello
I have a Jan 2002 E Class W210. I need to remove the Comand system in order to clean both lens and the rubber roller.

Can anyone assist in telling me how to remove this large unit? I have radio removal keys however I am of the impression that the unit is bolted into place?

Would trim removal tools be required or any particular special tools? Where do I start if trim removal is required?

Any guidance will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hi
Done it! Cleaned the CD roller and cleaned the lens. Roller now works correctly however the Nav still gives a disc error reading. Is there any way to check out the disc before I purchase another? Any S/W I can download just to test?
Thanks

HI I have the same problem, I think, can you explain what you did please. thanks Chris

Comand W210

Hi
I cleaned the roller and the lens however it only cured one of the two faults...that of the unit refusing to give me back my disc!

Info on disassmebly can be had at www.mercedesupgrades.com/Comand

It's then found amongst Servicing and Disassembly. The info plus pictures covers some 10 pages so you may want to print it out.

The problem with non return or partial return of the cd is cured by cleaning the roller with meths or surgical spirit. Nice thing about the meths is that you can drink it to celebrate success!

To clean the roller I used those cotton buds on sticks. My roller was absolutely black with muck.

Access to the unit was easier than I thought. Beloe the unit is the movable flap for the power socket and/or cigarette lighter. If you bend right down you will find two cross head screws above the flap. Best way of getting at them was to hold the flap partly in the open position. Once these screws are out the trim surrounding the unit just pulls out.

The Comand is held in position by two torx screws. Once removed you just pull the unit out and then access to the plugs etc is available.

My unit was faulty when I purchased the car some two weeks ago. It wasn't advertised as having Comand hence there is no disappointment however I'm trying to avoid buying another Tele Atlas disc. I've used a Tesco DVD/CD lens cleaning disc however to no avail.

I hope that this assists. By the way, before you disassemble the unit buy a static protection mat and wrist strap from .eg. Maplin. You will also need a 3 plug to connect to your mains earth unless you have a nearby earthed copper pipe. This way you will avoid blowing any of the ICs.
