W210 diesel smell

was driving back from a night out late last night and there was a really strong smell of diesel in the car, anyone know what this could be?

I am also hearing some strange rattling noises from under the bonnet when im in traffic.

there is no overheating of irregular fuel consumption...

my cruise control also randomly stopped working last night, but worked fine today.

Injector seal. Remove engine cover and see if there are any carbon deposits around any of the injectors.

While you are at it, check the ERG valve!

Also check if there is any small pools of Diesel around injector pockets. And Look at the pump.

Hopefully the noise is unrelated?

Thanks eveyone, i'll get it seen to this week - the smell had gone today, but if it comes back i'll definitely get it checked out asap!

As Kendon said look at any diesel around the injectors. Probably its a leak off pipe that is gone brittle.

I have the same problem on mine, injector 3 seal replaced 3 times over the last year and needs doing again ;-(. Any particular reason for this to wear out prematurely?

Who's replacing the seal? Are they doing it properly. After removing the seal and injector, you need to re-cut the seat for the new seal and clean the area really well before fitting the injector and new seal back.

Someone is fitting it incorrectly as Mo says or there is wear on the cylinder head.
