Hi Guys

Any clues on this.........
had a flat battery on my E55 - so had to start using jump leads

As soon as it fired up the idle was at between 1000-1400 rpm hunting up and down - and there is no response from the throttle pedal............I can push it all the way to the floor and nothing??

I had the usual esp/brake light come up after first start up which usually clears turning steering wheel a few turns left and right etc.

But the other problem is the big problem!!

Any ideas whats happened. I've had a flat battery before (don't use it enough) and have jumped it before with no issue, so I'm worried obviously (!) and completely lost

Any suggestions greatfully received.

Sounds like it has lost the Throttle Position Sensor. Unfortunately I have no idea how you get around that. You may have to get it plugged in.

Thanks, better hope they do home visits as its stuck in my driveway!

Hi,
If the car was mine I would get the battery off of the car and give it a good long charge then try the car again. These cars can suffer from all sorts of weird and wonderful faults if the battery is in a low state of charge or seen better days.

I think it may have seen better days as it doesn't hold a charge for too long, so may even throw caution to the wind and replace it and see if that has an effect.

Thanks

If you don't use the car regularly a maintenance charger is a good idea (provided there's a mains socket nearby). My SL is on one permanently after having fault codes caused by low voltage at startup some years back!

I suspect the throttle flap has lost its memory. Try leaving the ignition on for a minuite.

Quite often if the battery goes flat the adaptive maf values are lost in the engine control unit. You may need a new maf too.

Get it plugged into a Star firstly.

PS NEVER jump start a MB.

Could somebody explain correct starting procedure when Battery is flat ?
I always thought that if jump starting a vehicle a vehicle with Cam Bus electrics was safe if the jump leads were not removed imediately ?
Removing leads imediately would cause the Regulator to spike modules ?

Use surge protected jump leads only and don't put the key in the ignition until after you connect them and all will be fine.

Easy Fix, The Throttle position sensor has been disturbed with the battery off.

Follow the following procedure.

1. Get in and shut the door

2. Turn key to position 2 (right before the start position) DO NOT START THE CAR

3. Press the gas pedal to the floor... past the kick down point... (Quickly, Smoothly and keep the kickdown "button" depressed)

4. Hold the pedal there for 15 seconds

5. After 15 seconds while foot still planted, turn the key off but do not remove it

6. Release gas pedal (smoothly)

7. Wait at least 2 minutes while not touching anything in the car, don't open the door even. (Not sure about the door but this is how I did it)

8. After the 2 minutes start the car and drive off normally...

Had the same problem with my W202 after the battery went dead, do this, along with the steering left to right a few times and you'll be fine. I've jump started my car many times without issue, so you won't need to fork out money on star diagnostics!

Leaving the ignition on does the same thing. It's just re sets the throttle flap. This engine does not have a throttle position sensor.

Thanks All

I got a s****y new charger that got 18 hours or so into charging battery - before telling me battery needs replacing.

This being the case will hopefully do that today and see what happens. Will do re-set provided above and fingers crossed that will put this issue to bed.

Will update when I have the battery installed.

Thanks again.

Update on my problem...And a thanks for everyones help.

Battery was charged for 18 hours - before the "intelligent" charger advised me the battery needed to be replaced!
So, took it back to the auto shop, as it was only new in July.
The shop tested it and it was indeed spannered - it only had CCA of approx 200 - when it should have 850.
They replaced if free without question.
Put new battery in - left ignition on for a while as suggested above to reset - and started with no problems.
Hey presto hopefully problem solved.

Thank you all for help, much appreciated.
