My estate has a self-close thing - it doesn't actually shut the tailgate itself like my passat but it pulls itself shut when pushed to. Trouble is is makes a clunking sound when it does it and also when the car unlocks. Is this poor alignment after 9 years use? How easy is it (and how do i!) to realign and/or get rid of the clunking noise. It really mars locking up as the vacuum central locking is almost silent. Thanks.

The self closing mechanism has probably come loose or is in some way worn.

So, just for clarity, when you lock the car using your remote that's when you get the clunking sound?

I thought he meant the soft close mechanism.

I think he is talking about that but he mentions locking up being marred by this, so just wanted to clarify. Mine works but it does clunk a bit when I close the tail gate, but I don't hear anything untoward when locking the car.

Sorry

Away from PC yesterday. Thanks folks, yes that was a little unclear! It is when closing. The sounds is a little difficult to describe but is best described i think as a short series of clunks. Sounds as though as the tailgate is being pulled tight it is moving or realigning something in order to complete the operation.

I have a similar sound on mine, just taken it as normal.
