My heater/blower thingy is stuck on all the time. Even with keys out. I have to disconnect battery to stop it. What the heck do I do to stop it? Thanks

By the way, how it started...
It's been intermittent at best recently. I'd modified the brushes to get some life out of them last summer, but the fan if that's the right term was very weak.

It got pitiful recently, but I noticed that when I shut the engine off I got gale force air. So going to a job this morning, freewheeling down a road, I switched the ignition off and then refired the engine. Immediate storm force hot air, what I've been praying for since getting the car 18 months ago. Except it won't turn off!
The display says OFF. Still blowing like mad. If I switch it on 1 out of I think 5 it stays constant and hot as hell if selected. Turn it all off and its still kicking heat out like a blast furnace at full whack.

Better still or worse still, as mentioned, even when I take the keys out and the display is OFF, it still runs at full tilt. Disconnecting the battery is the only thing stopping it. That's getting tedious and its only been a day. Help.

Well, its day 4 now, still at it. Should I be thinking about relays maybe? If I can't suss it today gonna have to go to garage like I've got time to do that.

Purely a guess, but it sounds like the relay contacts (assuming it has one) are stuck.
That would be my first point of call.

This will be a fault with the regulator.

You know when you had a go at the motor? Remember that gizmo wired into it? That is the regulator, and pretty much the only part that can give these symptoms - motor is probaly fine.
You can get a new one from MB or ECP, it is not cheap!

Thank you chaps. Now that I know what I'm getting into I had the opportunity to tell the Missus ill be needing the to clear the kitchen table cos I'm about to get dirty. Imagine her disappontment when I explained, James may style, that I was planning to rewire a fan motor:)

Build up her hopes.........then dash them all in the same sentence. Shame on you :D:devil:

No, I suppose not, I do have to pull the mechanism though to get to the relay, right?

BTW, i've left it a couple of days due to work commitments, had my day planned to sort it today, went out this morning to a) track down a relay or b) do some nefarious re-wiring job to the cigarette lighter, and the car was dead! I'd forgotten to disconnect the battery as I have been doing for the last few days, thereby allowing the flippping crazy relay to drain everything down!

and as my garage is deep as hell, I cant get the neigbours car in to get a battery jump. !!! aarrgh. It is deffo goin to the nackers yard asap. I admit human error this time, but if it hadn't been messing me about for the 18months ive had it, It wouldnt be the last straw.

additional note!

I'd read that everyone said, "get ready, the part is an expensive one", so whilst waiting for the AA to give me a battery boost, I called my local dealer... To be fair, the lad at JCT600 was very sympathetic when informing me that the cost of a new regulator is (drum roll) £261.

As he said, anyone who can afford that for a bit of plastic could probably afford a new car anyway. I told him to put an AMG to one side and I'd be down to test drive it later. Oh well, Looks like a bodged electric job coming up.
