W210 key issue

Hi everyone, I am new here so be nice!

I wonder if you can assist me with something?
I have recently acquired a 1998 e300 td. It only has the one key. The remote does not work, so you have to pull out the key insert and manually lock the car. The car starts fine with the key.

I was wondering how I should go about getting a replacement key or repairing the one I have. The batteries appear to be fine in the key, although the LED does not light up when buttons are pressed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

How do you know the batteries are OK if the LED doesn't illuminate?

Sorry taking ages to reply! I have just replaced the batteries again, just to make sure- with genuine Mercedes ones. No illumination of the LED, what is the best way forward?
