Hi, I have a 1997 E300 TD, I have had it for over 2 years now and for the last 6 months there has been a loud noise coming from the engine, especially when i turn the stearing full lock to the left or right when idle. untill now the only way i could stop the engine is to put some nylon lubricant on the belts behind the fan..... this sort of work for a few 100 miles and the started again.... what could this nise be, i have started to get embaraced now... its like a growning sound.... at first i thought it was the fan itself but not sure now at all... not even the lubricant works now....

Anyone have any suggestions on what i should do???

I also have a 2000 C180, inside the car i hear a creaking sound when i am driving, the only way i can stop it is to turn up the radio... seems to be coming from the left hand side of the car but everyone who sits next me says it is coming from the room what could that be? has anyone had a similar problem? i know its a bit brief in detail but dunno how to describe it!!

On your W210, Have you checked your power steering fluid level? If its low you will get a groaning noise especially at tickover going lock to lock.

Creaking? Can you be more specific at all? The first thing i'd do is lower both sunvisors, mine tend to rub a little and make a sort of creaking noise.

The noise on the W21 is probably caused by a dirty drive belts(s). Best to renew the belt and clean the pulleys with degreaser or brake cleaner. If that does not cure the noise then it is probably the belt tensioner or possibly but unlikely the alternator.

Try a new belt first. Silicone spray and lubricants just make the belt sticky and it picks up more dirt making the noise worse.

Thanx for that, i will now attempt to clean the belts on a day im not working, cos its my brothers car i drive the small c180 :p, tell me more about the belt tensioner,.... ill let you know how it sounds after i clean the belts and if its the tensioner do i need to adjust or change? how do i do that? any pics????

thanx

I really wouldnt bother even trying to clean the belts, they get impregnated with grease and muck, if you really do want to it is best to remove them and soak in very hot water with washing up liquid. Whilst that is soaking use some degreaser on the pulleys.

Dont know why I put belts, I am sure it is only one long multi-ribbed belt that drives all.

The belt tensioner is a spring loaded small pulley that keps the belt tight, it is known for the bearing to get noisy, particularly on the C180!

K sounds like a big job, may have to spend a few hours on this by the sounds of it! Touch wood my C180 has been pretty sound sind i have owned it and no major problems at all. (Now ive sed that i may get one now lol)

Anyway must get an early night.. Thanx for you help will keep you posted on what i do next!

try a product called TFR (traffic film remover) which is stocked by partco. This is an excellent detergent and will totally strip away grease etc. If you wrap your engine electronics, like ecu, in clingfilm and cover the engine in TFR then blast away with a jet washer, it will leave your engine looking like new.

As spike mentioned it could be a power steering issue. If you turn the wheel full lock you should here a nasty noise. if not... dont know!
