Hi all,

Tryed to start car today but doesnt even crank!

It comes up with a few errors, such as, "Brake defective", "Electric consumers not functioning", "Braking distance increased", "SRS defective" and " ESP defective".

Anyone know what could be wrong?

Its a 2004 e270 cdi W211

Thanks,

Digi

Forgive me if I am stating the obvious here but my first guess would be a dying battery. If you have the means to test then you can at least discount it quickly.

The car is not that old to require a new battery but the 211 does has some quirks re the electrics and charging.

The battery is low either through a drain like when the rear SAM leaks, or the split for the 2 batteries is faulty

breakdown recovery guy came and said the battery was flat, so jump started it and it started first time. he checked the voltage and it was at 3.8 i think, and he says that the alternator is working (ie, charging) but must not be holding charge so need a new battery.

Should I buy a new battery?

You need to check the drain on a 211.

you also need to check the battery split box.

The above are the 2 known faults on you car,, if the car was fine the day before then something is taking it down a current check when sleeping should not be more than 40 ma

It hasnt been driven since last sunday, its used mainly short journeys on the weekend, so mabye this has put a strain on the battery?

Anyone know which model this battery is, and where I could purchase it? I tryed Halfords but they dont seem to stock it?

thanks!

A halfords battery is useless. why not buy a charger first,, your battery is only 3 years old , there is a 85% chance that it will be OK when charged up over night

i mostly drive it at weekends, so dont really want to have to jump start it every week! Car is just over 4 years old, is it normal for a batt to go at this age?

On these cars this can be a problem,, if I can explain.

The charge curve on a battery is a straight line that falls off rapidly once the level gets to the fall off point. by infrequent use the charge of the battery slowly works its way towards the fall off point,, this can take several weeks or 2 months.

I have to charge mine ever 6-8 weeks to get it fully charged, and I have the same 2 battery set up as you.

By all means go and buy a new one, get a Varta, Bosch, Exide, Banner from say a car parts company or Bosch service center, but you could be back to square 1 in a few months though the summer is on its way

Might buy a batt charger then, any reccomendations? thanks for your help.

Its impossible to answer everything perfectly, one can only go by an average of what I have posted.

You could try a 6-8 amp charger, that would do it over night, they only cost a few ££, without checking the battery its an unknown thing, if the tops come out, is it full of distilled water though water level is always low when discharged

just realised that the mileage has gone down about a thousand, the time clock was moving back aswell while I was trying to start car with the flat battery. Anyone know why the mileage would change after a flat battery? Also, anyone know the model of battery I require, having a bit of difficulty finding out which one!

thanks for all the help again.

Quick Q, if i take the battery out of the car to charge it in the garage overnight, will there be any problems when i reconnect it?

thanks

Non for the best part,, as your battery has gone flat,, the resets would have all been lost anyway.

So do take it out or disconnect one lead.

To re set. lower and raise the windows and hold the switch for 10 sec with the key turned to 2. do the same with a sun roof.

Its impossible to say what happened to the 1k miles that went,, our cars do not like being jump started.

A charger only cost £10 the battery if over 70 amp will be in the order of £120
