Not sure about the first - can't be sure what that oily unit is on the front of the engine. As for your second pic, I'm fairly sure that's the turbo oil seal that often gives problems. It needs fixing before it ruins the inlet port shutoff motor below. There's allegedly a modified seal that can be fitted, but I'm not sure how it differs to the one pictured.

As per the previous reply, the 2nd picture is probably the turbo oil seal. Normally you would be able to see this orange coloured oil seal, but in your case is covered in oil. I replaced mine back in September. MB part Number MA017 997 40 45. £32.80 + vat. The new one was a different design to the one I removed. Mine has been clean since. I also replaced the smaller orange seal with the sensor connected into it. P/N MA642 094 05 80 - 3.25 + VAT

Can anyone tell me whats the difference between the orignal orange turbo seal and the modded version?

Not a lot. If I remember the outer rim was thicker and fitted deeper in to the air intake feed, but you had to look closely

Steam clean the engine and then it will be easier to pinpoint the front part of the engines leakage.

The orange intake turbo seal gets contaminated with oil and becomes weakened (thinner) with age.
When refitting put the seal on the turbo side and not into the plastic pipe.

Don't use sealant on it when replacing, and check the breather systems 100% and isnt blowing oil into the charge pressure system low pressure side.

Would it be safe to use a degreaser such as GUNK around the turbo where the the seal is leaking then jet wash?

Hi guys I have cleaned and replaced my turbo intake seal however I am worried about the leak on the front of engine as it is hard to picture but there is a lot of oil around the area under the oil filter and all over the front of the engine including what can be seen on the above picture around pipes etc. The oil has also got on to the radiator fan any ideas where this oil could be coming from ?

I would check the Power Steering reservoir if it is up to the mark as i believe in another thread leaks ore quite common down on the pump pipes below where your mess is .....the oil may of been blown upwards while travelling!

Just getting back to that turbo seal i have just had mine replaced as a matter of course......when the MB mechanic cleaned off the oil covering the plastic covered loom holder under the seal with the MAF pipe removed he cleaned it with an aerosol of carb cleaner etc.

When it was assembled and he started it up there was detonation where the turbo had got hold of some carb cleaner which had not evaporated...ok no problem...but when he went on STAR to check things the fuse for number 54 Blue 15amp was blown!!.... This 54 and number 53 are fuses for engine electrics on the 320cdi engine....so why did it blow....because he must of short circuited the plug connector which goes on the swirl motor.....and he did it with the carb. cleaner.

There is no other reason for the fuse to blow as i had no problem before and non since......so i do believe failure of the swirl motor is not always oil getting into the switch but oil mist shorting out the connector as it does face upwards for the oil to collect in it amongst the wires!

At the moment my new type turbo seal has kept it all clean but i will be covering the connector with tape or whatever to try to avoid any problems occurring.

I replaced the red turbo intake seal which solved the first oil leak.

The oil leak on the front of the engine was a black O ring seal in the metal intake pipe which was not fitted correctly which was passing oil.

I bought a new black O ring seal however it looked same as the old seal i think it all comes down to fitting as the seal is easily moved when fitting and then it passes oil as it is not in the right position.

After replacing my black O ring seal it is still leaking and all i can think it has gone out of place when i have refitted.

I will check it again when the weather gets better main thing is the leak has been located.

What is the charge pressure system low pressure side?

Looks like blow by pressure from the Turbo, if you take the turbo air feed and pipes off i reckon you will see oil in them.

I just got an E280 and seem to have the same leaks in same places but just wondering how bad can the leak get at the turbo end like after driving the car I can walk away and come back to a puddle of oil at the rear of the engine I’ve seen this kit but wonder if there’s more to this leak than just the turbo seal as it’s a good amount of oil on the ground
