W211 Engine cuts out

My E280 has started to cut out, no error messages etc just cuts out. If I leave it for 20-30 minutes it works again, for a mile or so.

Taken it to a garage and it's showing cam and crankshaft sensor faults (the codes were cleared and checked again after failing). But they have the car running in the workshop and it's been running fine for an hour or so with no codes coming up. Nor can they see the oil leak. They are a bit stumped at the moment.

The car has been leaking a lot of oil recently and was due to go in to be fixed the day after it started cutting out.

Any ideas? Could it be the oil leak causing something?

Its a 2006 car with 166k so not really worth chucking money if you know what I mean.

Sounds like the infamous Crankshaft sensor is failing. It will get worse and eventually refuse to start .
Symptoms are cutting out when hot, engine cools down and it restarts.
Its around a £200 job at a Mercedes specialist to supply and change the sensor.

Did you have one do something like this? Do you reckon it would need to be driven, as it hasn't failed on them whilst ticking over in the shop (nor seemingly has the oil leaked)

Does this cause the camshaft fault as well?

I presume it's got nothing to do with the oil leak?

Actually it may have been crankshaft, the repair was very reasonable. Iirc around £100/130
