Just read a post on MBWorld regarding resetting the ECU (Engine Control Unit) on the W/S211. This is how you do it:

- Turn to the on position (#2)
- Press the gas pedal to the floor and hold for about 5 – 10 seconds
- Turn the key to the off position (do not remove) without removing your foot from the gas pedal
- Do not remove your foot from the gas pedal for at least 2 minutes waiting for the ECU to reset

Just did it, and my car behaved as a new car. Gear switching is very smooth, and the performance increased dramaticly. This is probably how it was when it was new, but a decrease during the last three years are not noticable. The strange thing is that a just got my car back after ASSYST. Why do they not reset the ECU as a part of the service program?

The trick is valid for all W/S211. Just go ahead. You will have a big smile....

And in two days time it will be back adjusted to your driving style again.

Hi Oslo,
Thanks for that, I also read that message and thought it might be worth posting........ Then I forgot :o :o :o :o :o

I take onboard Brian's point but any 'niggly habits' will have possibly been deleted. I am also thinking here of the Easy Exit\Entrance glitch that periodically rears its ugly head.

Thanks for the post.

Regards
John

Once you've turned the key off, you can take your foot off the gas pedal - just dont turn it back on for 2 mins! :-)

Thanks Oslo, thats handy to know.

Do you know if it just resets the ECU / adaptive gearbox stuff i.e. the way it drives, or if it also reverts the things like memory positions on seats, Fuel and trip consumptions etc?

John,
Do you mean comfort opening/closing? My W211 works for a while and then stops.........and a few days later starts......and then stops. Mechanic reckons that it is a receiver problem. The receiver in the door handle needs changing (£110) but I think it would not work at all if the receiver was faulty.
Do you think that resetting the ECU may cure this problem too?

Hi Ray
Good question, my personal believe is that it might rectify the fault but it will not cure it. We have also been plagued by this problem although it had been okay for about 18 months, it has now returned :o

Our vehicle is booked in to have whatever needs replacing, replaced! The service manager has booked it in for two days! It will also be having all four wheels replaced. All under warranty :)

Blooming useless stealers!!!

Sorry I cannot be more helpful, but I believe newer models do not have this full option!

Regards,
John

John,
Good luck.......let us know how it goes, and what they had to replace to cure the comfort closing problem please.

Will do :o This last 'cure' has lasted 18 months, but in all fairness the dealer could not have been more helpful!

Bye for now,
John
