is this car undriveable in the winter / snow with summer tyres fitted . if I did fit winter tyres do I really need to do all 4 ???

Most rear wheel drive cars are poor in wet/snow conditions.

Winter tyres must be fitted on all 4 wheels or you will find the car very unstable, especially when braking.

Living in Durham, Whitenemesis is almost certainly right. Here in the soft South (Snow? Oh, yes, that white stuff we get for a couple of days in winter...) probably not, if you take care. I drive to the conditions, and both the E55 and the 55K were OK, but I never had to climb/descend any significant unsalted slopes. If I lived in Co. Durham, I'd probably fit winter tyres though. Tec is dead right.

I live on a bus route and then onto the a19 to work - both are gritted . so I may be ok . I have a spare set of 18" alloys I may just chuck on in the winter , with winter tyres fitted and see how I get on .

thanks for the input lads.

If its any help, my CLK 320 was no issue at all in 12 inches Pplus in the Alps this winter, with 4 winters on.

Utterly amazed me, the snow was level with the headlights at times and I had zero control problems.

My e320CDI was perfectly fine in snow (for entire 2 days 2 years ago). My W208 CLK although struggled but W211 was very good with normal conti contact sport 3s all around.

its drivable on flat surfaces, as soon as you hit an icy incline\decline you will have trouble!

yes change all 4 tyres

Put some heavy paving slabs in the boot.
