Hi guys,

I just wondered if you could advise on your experience of replacing a battery in my E320 CDI. I'm suspecting it is somewhat knackered, everything is fine generally but now and then I'll get a message about functions being turned off when it's sat for 24 hours or so.

I'm not sure if it's the original battery although would be surprised at 13 years old if it was.

Question is, do I need to go to an MB dealership to pick up a replacement or will the equivalent from Euro Car Parts do the trick? Happy to spend out on a quality battery so cost isn't so much the issue but want to make sure I'm getting the best one for the car. :thumb:

Whilst it is likely to be the battery if it is the original it would be wise to have the charging system checked to ensure it is not the alternator or other component.

As long as the battery physically fits, has the correct Amp/ hour and Cold Cranking Amperage rating it matters not where you buy it from. MB are often very competitive on battery prices.

Thanks mate, that's really helpful.

Is there an easy way to check the charging system? I'm not exactly an expert at this kind of thing.

MB were actually cheaper than any aftermarket - ask for a discount (just say your part of a Mercedes forum) and you may get some money off.

Oh and you have two batteries (Aux under bonnet and main in the boot)

Any garage would be able to check this for you. If buying from MB you could always ask for a quick free check before you buy the battery :)

Thanks again guys.

I am aware there is a smaller one under the bonnet. Would the main battery in the boot affect the one under the bonnet? I assumed the larger battery is used to start the car etc.

I just went through this same exercise as had various random error messages and convenience funcitons not working.

Definitely replace both and use OEM

Main (system) battery in the boot does all the electrics, the Aux battery under the bonnet only comes into play should the main battery voltage drop below a critical level. Both batteries are charged by the alternator as required.

Get the charging system checked out and change both batteries, only approx £80 for the aux from MB

Hi,
On the small battery under the bonnet will be a date sticker/stamp, if its over four years old just replace it was the advice from an MB Tech when I was having problems with mine. In fact he said look for a date stamp on both batteries and replace if any of them were over four years old.

+1...Mercedes do not have a battery making plant, they buy approved product from suppliers like Varta, Bosch etc if your battery is faulty, you need to check the spec, link below shows a comparable Varta Battery with 5 year warranty, I do not think MB offer 5 years...?

Note Varta supply many OEM's direct globally at vehicle manufacturing plants...

Hi,
Just looked at the EPC and the CLS63 has a AGM Battery (Mercedes term is Fleece Technology) having looked at prices of these I found that the prices were cheaper from MB Dealer.
Do get it confirmed from a dealer but if you were to replace it with a normal lead acid type then I believe there is a possibility of the car overcharging due to the slightly different requirements of a AGM Battery and a Lead Acid.

Thanks Andy, fortunately this is for the E320 not the CLS. Either way though I'll be double checking and calling up my local MB parts dept! :)

I recently bought a battery from my local indy which was a Mercedes type,
it cost about £130.

Hi,
Is this for a 211? As what I said previously may apply regarding the AGM (Fleece Technology) Battery, if you message me or post here the full vin or at least the first six numbers of the Vin I can also check that if you like.
