W220 overheating?

I am thinking about fitting a secondary electric fan and thermal switch due to my old S320 limo overheating. It only happens in warm weather, or in heavy traffic. I've got by with turning the heater up full and opening the windows.
The warning " Coolant -visit workshop" seemed to indicate the fan was at fault. It's an expensive part and just think the extra fan would be a cheaper fix.
Any advice would be helpful.

Have you tried to source the fan from the breakers?use sites like partsgateway.co.uk or alternatively search the breakers section of the forum.

Have you actually tested the fan motor? it could be the sensor or other link in the chain. If the motor is good a cheap get you going fix would be to wire directly to a switch in the cabin and if you see the need for cooling switch it on :)

It is intermittent. I have heard the fan kicking in and keeping things cool, but I've also seen it top out until I can get it on a good run. I wouldn't trust it to come on with a switch. I've had a look at second hand ones, but it seems a common problem with the older models and I cant image that I would get much better than I have.
I'll try the breakers on the site.
Btw, are the sensors reasonably priced?

What's the radiator like? Could be choked internally reducing cooling capacity. If you can beg borrow or buy one-- run a remote infrared thermometer over the radiator for cooler spots where the coolant isn't circulating. Might be worth draining the system-removing the radiator and back flushing it- you could also try pressure washing the coolant matrix externally but if its the original radiator it might be worth looking for a radiator specialist that will recore it for you?
