Has anyone ever considered fitting a Webasto sunroof like the one here. I had one years ago on a Mk3 Cortina Estate and it really gave the car a open air feel.

No experience of those I'm afraid but Webasto are obviously a well known name in this field.

I see they also do panoramic glass versions now too, could be an interesting mod, especially on an estate:

DONMAR:Topslider Sunroofs

Altough I think it's likely to be expensive and I doubt there are many sunroof installation specialists around now?

Surprisingly there are quite a few. I used the locator on the webasto website and it came up with 4 specialists within half an hour of us in sussex.

Webasto Sun Roof.

Don't ! Many years ago I ran a classic Jaguar Mk 2, had one of these fitted and the major problem is wind noise. Noisy when closed and deafening when open. Totally inferior to a factory fitted metal sun roof. The after market glass tilt up type are better, but nothing beats a proper metal one.
My 2c worth!!
Sean.

They are superb!

I dream of the day when I can afford to have a gorgeous W123 wagon with a full length Webasto roof!

VW did a Polo with a full length webasto not too many years ago,go find a dealer with a secondhand one for sale and give it a whirl to see if you could live with one

I think theyve come on a long way since the 70s

And if you couldn't you will have to live with a nice big hole in your roof:eek:

I was suggesting he tried to test drive one of those VWs to see what he thought of the wind noise before cutting a hole in his own roof!

I had one of those on a Mini 1275GT (in the early 80s), Brown vinyl over a kind of butterscotch colour.

It was outstanding once I'd saved enough pennies to have a new one fitted to replace the crusty old on that was on it.

different car different aerodynamics.

Many moons ago I tried to get one fitted to a Volvo, at that time it was a big no no due to the Volvo having a sort of roll over bar (under the headlining)this being part of safety system. A Sunroof was a special order.

My Mini 1275GT had a Webasto vinyl roof as well. The car got crashed and scrapped, but the roof lived on.

Had one put in my old MGB GT about 5 years ago by a nice man in Sandwich Kent, who was a specialist & used to work for Webasto. transformed the car... brilliant

Thank you guys for all your comments as usual it has given me plenty of food for thought. If the roof cage allows it I may well go for it. I do like the idea of letting the sun shine into the car. :D

I have one ( factory fitted ) in my Ponton and it is great ( see sig pic below ) . All the fresh air and summer smells of freshly cut grass etc , without the draughts and buffeting of a convertible . They were a popular factory option in the fifties , until MB started offering a metal sliding roof in the Fintail series . I have still seen some Fintails , W114/5 models and one W116 retrofitted with them though .

As already stated , there are still specialists who will fit these rooves , or repair one if required ( mine needs new fabric as it is tearing at the edges , but still does not leak , but then it is 55 years old ) .
