website help

Just written a website to promote me so I can get a new job basicaly, im sure it will have a million and 1 other uses over time, picture hosting for ebay etc,

problem is this

http://www.marktheengineer.com

takes you to a list of the files on my server, or doesnt work at all as I just checked it, how do I get it to automatically go to my first page which is index.html, ie this link works,

http://www.marktheengineer.com/Index.html

im stuck, if it helps I am with www.uk2.net, dunno if that means anything, you may also notice the handy and free link to this website on the my cars page,

I agree we should show everybody our websites for a bit of promotion of others sites, maybe even have links to other peoples sites in our own? I suppose it would be a web ring for merc enthusiasts or a mercring,

editing my own post........ I have Index.html with a capital I, will update and re FTP see if that fixes it.......

I feel like im talking to myself, this is the 3rd time I have modded this thread

Try renaming Index.html to index.html (i.e., lower-case i). The server might be case-sensitive.

It could be the server is case sensitive or that it is configured for a different extension. Make sure the filename is all lower case. Also, you could try changing the extension to .htm

Actually, reading the error message again:

The requested URL /www.marktheengineer.com/index.html was not found on this server.

it seems to be looking for index.html in a top-level directory named www.marktheengineer.com. Not sure how your site and server are set up, but this doesn't seem quite right.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

An Apache guru will be along shortly to explain this one, I'm sure.
