What does E320 mean?

all very confusing and if buying second hand could be difficult

as someone who's looking at BMW's again, it is an issue. as you say, if you look at a car like the BMW 320i, it could be about 4 different engines, with different sets of figures for capacity, power output, torque, fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions (and hence tax). and the only way to work out which is which is probably to read the V5 for the CO2 figure.

and the thing is that they can be quite different too, at worst it would be:

320i '05
0-60: 8.7
power: 147
torque: 200
mpg: 38
CO2: 178

320i '07
0-60: 7.9
power: 170
torque: 210
mpg: 46
CO2: 146

and that's just the 320i.. the 318i is also a 2l 4 cylinder engine.

it's a minefield.

true. blame the green people. 325i,330i,335i, all petrol 3.0 litres but 335i, biturbo, 330i more power than 325i

Thanks for explaining that.

I thought it had something do with engine size/power. Not the mass of the thing.

So my E class would be 214cdi (2 ton 140bhp). Makes good sense that.

110bhp in a 3 ton vehicle must be terminally slow

If you think thats slow there was an older van that was a 308 !! b4 cdi
3ton and only 80bhp

would you know about the coaches? i knmow they are all made in brazil but i still recall numbers like 0362,0364,0303,0371,0330, 0400
and the trucks like 911 and 1924 and 2624

We didnt do much work on the coaches at the dealer i worked at. I can see it being all about the engine though because the body is done by a coach builder (alexander), (wrights).

Trucks are the same as vans 1924= 19 ton 240hp 2624= 26 ton 240hp

Guys, please stop......I feel dizzy.

LOL and the commercial vehicles are worse!
A sprinter 311cdi is 3ton 110hp
814 truck is 7.5ton 140hp
Actros 2425 would be 24ton 250hp
And so on.......
Every so often I see small buses badged as 609D.

That's 6 ton, 90 bhp? Must go like a rocket! :)

No guys, THIS says it all

'S' class
Fuel injected
Long wheelbase

6.9 litres of lovely power.

Don't know why the never called it the 690 SEL though......

Probably the most awesome car I have ever driven.

Myu Sprinter is a 213 which has the same engine as 209, 211, or 215

Our 213 is the 4 cylinder 2148cc turbo engine but our previous vehicle was the 212 Sprinter with the 5 cylinder 2.7 litre engine. Confused?? :D

Most of the numbers I have posted refer to the very latest new shaped Sprinter.

Regards
John

I was told Sprinter numbers related to the length and the horsepower , i had a 312 which was 120hp , the 313 had 130 and so on , same basic engines often but different turbos and injectors

So if the E280 and E320 both have 3 litre engines is it just a rechip on a E280 to produce the E320 power or is there more to it. Same question with all other cars with same cc engine size.

The Sprinter raised the bar regarding performance and these van's will embarrass quite a few modern cars. Our 213 Sprinter will 'fly' up Telegraph Hill which to those that are not aware, a very steep, long hill that sorts out the men from the boy's. The older, box type Mercedes van had the performance of a geriatric slug on valium.

Nope you were given duff information,;)
Our vehicle is a medium wheelbase high-top and is still a 213. It could have been either a short or long wheelbase with a standard roof, but it would still be a 213.

First number relates to tonnage, second two numbers are bhp.

So if the E280 and E320 both have 3 litre engines is it just a rechip on a E280 to produce the E320 power or is there more to it. Same question with all other cars with same cc engine size.
Spot on :)

basically yes. an ecu remap i believe or in some cases higher running chargers and turbos

Hi Maddog,
I didn't really pay enough attention to your post although the answer I gave is correct.

You are comparing two completely different engines from different vehicles. :)

The 312 is from the original Mercedes and is a five cylinder engine, the 313 is a four cylinder engine on the face-lift model. My wife much prefers the performance of the 120hp five cylinder engine compared to the 130hp four cylinder of the facelift model. :o

To help illustrate my point I will list just some of the latest Sprinter configurations

The '2' equates to 3t GVW
209CDI Short wheelbase, medium wheelbase
211CDI SWB, MWB
213CDI SWB, MWB
215CDI SWB, MWB
218CDI SWB, MWB

All the above come as standard with the short roof, but higher roofs are a cost option

The '3' equates to 3.5t GVW
309CDI SWB, MWB, Long Wheelbase High Roof, Extra LWB + HR
311CDI SWB, MWB, LWB + HR, Ex LWB + HR
313CDI Ditto
315CDI Ditto
318CDI Ditto

The '4' equates to 4.6t GVW
411CDI MWB Short Roof, LWB + HR, Ex LWB + HR
415CDI MWB +SR, LWB +HR, Ex LWB + HR
418CDI Ditto

The '5' equates to 5t GVW
511CDI MWB Short Roof, LWB + HR, Ex LWB + HR
515CDI MWB +SR, LWB +HR, Ex LWB + HR
518CDI Ditto

Phewwww Hopefully I have not made any typing errors and more important you understand the configurations?

All engines are the 4 cyclinder beast with the exception of the 180bhp flying machine  :)

John

even the e280cdi is 3.0litres as well and c280 is 3.0l, c200cdi and c220 cdi are both 2.2l. the old e240 was a 2.6 v6. i think it is the green guilt, as the s500 is called 550 in the US as it is 5.5litres
right reach for my ibuprofen

And there are additional models sold in only some regions.

Eg. there is a new E230 just launched in SE Asia. This has V6 2.5l engine.

(The old V6 E240 was quite popular in SE Asia so presumably there was demand to replace it).

Hi dryce,
I just checked on the Indian site and could only find the petrol E200Kompressor or the V6 3ltr engine

Diesel E-class
280CDI V6 3ltr engine

What I did find strange was they are still advertising:

Braking system
SBC Electrohydraulic braking system, discs all round, ABS with Brake Assist

Regards
John

Edit
E230
Found it in Singapore
V6 2496cc

Well I did say S*E* Asia!

I think the E230 is being assembled from kits in Malaysia.

I noticed that the local facelift E in Malaysia doesn't seem to have the tacky little twin silvered strips either side of the fog light - just the less tacky silver surround.

This must be a 211.052/211.252. 272.922 engine.

I wouldn't be surprised if they manufactured W123 cars in India still today, isn't it possible that they really have the pre-face-lift model there?

The picture certainly looks like a face lift model but the advertising refers to the SBC braking system. They also do not import any E-class estate and only offer the Classic or Elegance plus the E63AMG :o

Cost of the 280CDI Elegance = 4,442,592.00 INR
