what is black death

Normally it's the copper o ring under the injector that fails, allowing the diesel to be forced up and out onto the rocker cover.

So the black tar substance is diesel? what will get it off without chippin, most of it under bulk head

The black build up is carbon, some people find soaking it overnight in full sugar coke, or a mix of plusgas / petrol can soften it. But there is no getting away from the fact that your going to need to chip it away by hand.

Then things get really interesting when you try to remove the injectors...

How many injectors are leaking?

looks like 1, it was literaly popin up, some bafooon just kept running it, but then again I wouldn't of got a cheap van .

what size are those copper rings? is it a merc part

You can get them from mercedes, ebay, anywhere really, do an ebay search and you'll find the stretch bolts and washers.

Remember to re-cut the injector seat, and clean out the thread for the stretch bolt. And DO NOT over tighten it!

Dear stuff? there is only 1 coca cola! The original full sugar one, spar cola is re-named drain cleaner.

If the orig bolt is now too small after recutying seat, what size do i get?

its not the treads your affecting its the contact surface for the copper washer, and remember to be careful not to put a hole in the rocker cover as someone I know did this on their S210 320cdi, not me.....honest :)

so what is correct procedure, take off cam cover and rethread the bolt, will the bolt size (width) be a different size?

Like I said, it looks like an helicoil has been used and its failed, I understand now and cleaning off the cam cover seat its that correct?

This is an issue for me as well. Had limp mode on a couple of occastions, so took it to a local independent dealer I could trust to give it a once over as was leaking something and garage I purchased from was miles away. Well injector 1 has been bodged up and is leaking fuel, so needs fixing asap. I was told Mr Muscle with a good scrub would shift the black deposit on the engine!

A quick question.....would a leaking injector cause steam to come out from the bonnet? Noticeable from battery area when stopped. It smells like diesel so I am hoping the injector would be causing this!

Thanks

Mr muscle, obviously injectors stsy in, how the hell does 1 get to the bavk 2 with mr muscle

Sounds like diesel spray

I would be wary of using a caustic cleaner on the aluminium cylinder-head.

please listen to dieselman for he is a wise man and he is regarded as the oracle on all things mechanical.

I haven't done any cleaning nor will I it will be the garage that fixes the problem.

I popped the bonnet when got home and the battery could be the issue with smoke, however there is no rotten smell you associate with a troublesome battery.
