What is the best Mercedes........

You can't overlook the 124 cars....the most over engineered vehicle ever manufactured by Merc...probably more 124's on the road worldwide then any other pre 1990's production Merc :thumb:

Sorry , would have to disagree on that one .

The bean counters had most certainly started to assert themselves by the time the W124 came out .

Even compared to its immediate predecessor , the W123 , there are examples of cost cutting to be seen - look at the window winder mechanism as a prime example : on the W123 it WAS truly over-engineered , a big , solid assembly with machined components bolted together ; on the W124 you have a cheap , nasty piece of stamped putty-metal which is well known for wearing out ( there can be few long term W124 owners who have not replaced the drivers door window mechanism , I myself have been through three over two cars ) .

More on the road worldwide ? Not so sure . Don't know production figures , but I'd have to guess there are probably more W123's trundling around the dirt tracks of Africa and everywhere else besides .

Surely , if it is over-engineering you are talking about , the winner has to be the W100 type 600 : everything about that car is bigger , heavier , more solid and more clever than any other car : central hydraulic system for windows , seat adjustment , door closure , BOOT OPENING AND CLOSURE ; twin generators to power all the electrical items on board ; somethiong like 20 interior lights ; those lovely glass wind deflectors next to the rear side windows so the occupants don't get a draught when the window is open ; even the three pointed star on the bonnet of a 600 is MASSIVELY over engineered compared to the puny things on newer cars ( and bigger , too ) .

My recent trip to Indonesia (4th most populous place on the planet) 124s outnumber 123s 5 to 1.. I guess the 123s are just rusting away :D

Obviously the best MB in the world is the C124, particularly the 300CE 24V variety..

In two tone blue black ;)

Perhaps they're all in Nigeria now :)

I think you'll find that an issue of economic development.

Lots of 124s in Malaysia. That's because the economy started to race ahead in the 80s onwards. So more customers once the W124 came along.

And they don't rust much compared with northern Europe. And labour to fix them and keep them going is cheaper.

I would guess Indonesia is much the same.

W124 without a doubt, modern enough to be used daily, but engineered to go on forever

My favourite to look at and listen to (I would imagine - having never heard it) - 300SLR 1955 vintage.

Would hate to drive it though - how can you drive a car which has two pedals in one footwell, and the other pedal in the other footwell? :wallbash:

I can't even decide which one of my MBs is the best!

The C200K is great for a long journey or just popping into town for an evening out.

The ML350 is great for carrying stuff (although I've got a Berlingo van that carries stuff better, but isn't as nice to drive) and the big engine sounds great

The SLK230 is the least practical, it's difficult to climb in and out, but it's great on a winding country lane, and summer isn't summer without open top motoring.

If I had to choose just 1, I guess it would be the ML. But i would miss the others.

Best? If you have to choose one it's got to be the current W221 S class, there's nothing better for most people's everyday needs - I'd certainly not be complaining.

Otherwise? Smart for the original innovation, the SL for desirability and performance in a package you can use everyday, Sprinter for bringing car driving performance to medium vans.

W124's every time. I Have 3 of them in various guises. Built by engineers not accountants. 202's? cr@p. Have more problems with them than anything else.

Ditto. 124s for me. Started off my ownership of Mercedes with 190's then went to W124's which I thought at the time were too big and too old. Then 202's but soon went back to the space, grace and reliability of the W124. I shop at the cheaper end of the market and value for money wise the 124 works out best.

So pleased you said that BlackC55, as thats what i recently bought for £435, thought it would fit 'Whats the cheapest merc' ! !

Can anyone post a pic of a W100 type 6oo ? I dont know what one looks like. please

Iirc, Bruno Sacco cites the W201 as the most important Mercedes-Benz he's been involved with.
LJK Setright cited the W201 190E 2.6 as one of his favourite cars of all time.
Martin Brundle cited the W201 as one of the greatest DTM chassis ever.

I just really like them, and want to buy another one.

The best Mercedes is always the one in your garage! :D :D

Yep. I've not found a car that I would want to swap mine for. It goes fast; it can carry a family of four in comfort; it goes fast; it goes around corners well* (don't believe Non MB drivers who say they don't); did I say that it goes fast. :thumb:

*Allbeit with a little fettling ;)

Thanx N/B, seen em, lovely.
