What laptop

I have a Dell Studio 17 that was chosen as a replacement for a desktop.

I've had this now for about 6 months and I like it and wouldn't now bother with a desktop as I can use this anywhere.

It is not light, so if it's being used as a genuine laptop I'd probably spend a bit more and get a lighter one.

The only must have is a mouse as the finger pad is not the most pleasant I've used.

Don't pay extra for huge ram upgrades as the system only recognised 3gb or similar and everything above that isn't really used.

It's a genuine desktop replacement, but when we go to the States in August we'll be taking my old Dell15" which is lighter and much more what I'd consider a laptop.

I now dont bother buying anything other than Dell, they do exactly what they should for sensible money, my business system is also Dell.

Isn't this a helpful forum. Glojo asks which laptop to buy, and every laptop made today gets recommended.

Rather than recommend a particular brand maybe it would be better to judge by it's spec and what it can do. After all the inner workings of them are made by the same people so what difference does it make if it's a Dell or Compaq etc, your just paying for the name.

The inner workings are not all made by the same people. Yes there are some large assemblers such as compal mitac and foxconn but the inner workings are designed by in house teams to meet particular requirements. Even across ranges, the workings of a Tecra and a Satellite, or a Compaq Presario and a HP Business Notebook, and especially the cheap PC world Sony and the top of the range carbon fibre ones, are hugely different.

On top of that you pay for after sales care, and with laptops you'll often need it, especially if used on the road.

I have a range of them to hand, my main PC is a Tecra M10, my previous one (in use by no. 2 son) is a Tecra A5. I have a Sat Pro for No 1. son. I also have an inspiron 620 or two lying around. Dell have annoyed me more year on year with diminishing support, eventually forcing me to replace a 3 yr old server due to unavailability of parts, and tell a client that his 250 quid laptop needed a 120 quid keyboard to fix it, and other things. If you get a good one, you're fine.

HP support will send parts out in advance if they fail. In fact if you have fail prediction on the storage systems they'll send them out before they fail. Some toshibas have a money back if fail in warranty scheme. Dell don't give a monkeys about small business or individual customers.

Hence my opinion. Pay the money and get quality, otherwise save the money so you can replace the 300 quid one from the supermarket (there are some great hi-spec lo-cost deals there) when it fails.

Don't even get me started on Samsung UK support!

Very TRUE

At the end of the day - you get what you pay for! There are differences in the prices for a reason - and that reason is quality, reliability and performance.

You can get whirlpool washing machines and Miele washing machines - they both wash clothes!

If it's of assurance to you, I and other friends have bought IT equipment from ITC and been happy with the sevice.

Since it's the only one in stock, I'd call up first just to be satisfied it was still in stock. The reference number for that laptop is 1574.

Vista or Windows 7

Presuming this laptop will have Vista installed - make sure you are eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 7. Microsoft are going to offer this upgrade to next OS to stop sales stagnating - it all depends on time scale - offer might be available now?

Mike

PS and yes, Windows 7 is worth getting.

My son has already pestered me about this... I failed to see the VAT mark-up on the previous link but it is still a good buy :)

My sincere apologies Glojo. I did originally post the price as £629 inc VAT, when in fact it was £629 exc VAT, which made the price £723! Sorry again.

If she wishes to be closer to her original budget of £600, then maybe this is a better laptop:

Dell Studio 15 in Ruby Red Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz 4GB Ram 250GB FFS HDD Blu-Ray 15.4" WXGA+ LED 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450 Vista Home Premium 3 Year Dell On Site Warranty|Dell Studio 15 laptops

It is £620 inc VAT

It does have the smaller 15" screen though.
