I always carry a top up bottle of oil in the car just in case.
What oil do I need for a new C250 CDI? Is mobil 1 the one Mercedes recommend? What grade?

Hi, personaly I would play safe and have a look in the handbook, failing that I would ask the dealer.

Book is not good. It just tells me to buy 229.31 Mercedes approved oil. It ask me to go to a web site to get a list of approved oils but it just says to get some multigrade oil.

Brand (and grade) are up to you - but make sure it meets 229.31

Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 1L
Part No.: 521771862
Web Price: £17.99

You also have Castrol Edge 5w30 FST and Castrol Magnatec 5w40 C3 to choose from...

Don't forget, if you spend over £20 you can use the 25% forum discount :)

NO__________________________! excellent oil for non DPF cars Pete but as I explained 2 posts back its not suitable for a car with a DPF!! :wallbash:

Nice to know all this. Coming from a non DPF car, I glad I have asked the question.

DPF Failure is NOT a fun thing to happen!

MB Request 229.31 so make sure the oil is 229.31 :) there's loads to choose from I'm sure we do our own Triple QX Range, but I can't see until Tuesday :)

Nice of you to get around to finally mentioning that. ;) If you are 100% sure you don't have a DPF then you can get away with the cheaper 229.3 or 229.5 diesel engine oils no problem. But you got to be sure. What exactly is the age of your coupe?

FORGET THAT!!!!! I have just seen a picture of your car in your profile--- believe me your car does have a DPF unless you have modified the exhaust.

If you have DPF it will be on the datacard.

I got my 330D (sorry, its not a Merc, but atleast its German) serviced 2 weeks ago, and swore blind i had no DPF............

Checked when i got back to the office, and it did:doh:

However, the oil i choose (Valvoline Synpower) was low SAPs and is recommended for my car with/without DPF :thumb:

SmartMac - I would take Graemes advise, - Buy the correct 229.31 oil, and you'll be safe!

I asked my dealer the same question about which oil was recommended when they did the pdi check on my c250 cdi but all they could tell me was "low ash". This was quite a different approach from my recent Audi experience where they were very prescriptive about oil choice.

You say the book is no good as it tells you to use 229.31.

The answer to your question is 229.31

So in what way is the handbook no good? :D

Hi Grober,

Of that list of oils which you posted which of the castrol's are the best (how would i find out which one of them)

also should I go for 5w30 or 5w40?
