Your views appreciated;

I dropped into our local garage to pay a service bill :( and sitting in the car park was a 1994 M facelift W124 estate E200. Asked what it was doing there and was advised the head gasket had gone and the garage owner was waiting for the owner to drag it away for disposal.

as E200's go it is v high spec 7 seats, leather, cruise, metallic green, and A/C, steel wheels and no headlight wipers. 179k on the clock and full mbsh.

What should I offer, I mainly want it for the interior as it is the same grey as ours and i'd get a leather upgrade :)

Your thoughts would be appreciated, I reckon £400 as a non runner

Thanks

Paul

Seems about right- add up what the cost of all the bits you want might be second hand. Price the car for spares as it stands- for example could be worth slightly more to someone with exactly the same 4 cylinder car [mechanically sound with say a failed MOT on a rear subframe]- find out its MOT status also which might indicate if the body/chassis is worth anything. Does no harm to put in an offer but be realistic or you will be wasting everyone's including your own time.

Paul:The price is about right but about the same price, you can get grey leather for your estate

My pal recently broke two 124 estates and still has both a 200 engine and a 220 engine .

I know one of the engines is good but can't remember which - either would fit this car though .

If the car is as good and well specced as it sounds , dropping another engine in might be a good option .

Thanks, the carpets etc are also in better nick so it would be a bit more than a std seat swap and as it was 1 mile from my home it seemed a no brainer if it comes at the right price.

Mmmm a good point i'll also check on the MOT as suggest and go from there.

If you can get that for 400, then its a bargain.

There are not many 124's with grey leather out there. d w124 pointed me in the right direction for a grey leather interior for mine. I'll pm you what I paid.

Good luck with the deal. If you get the cars scrap value once you have done the seat swop is around 120.

Buy it for the leather, shelve the rest of the usable spares if you've got space and then sell/scrap the rest.

I'd imagine that at 179k miles and with a knackered engine the owner would be pleased with £400, and it's a fair buy for you as well.

Or you could just swap the trim and other bits, and sell it on as a complete car, with a cloth intererior (not a problem for the average E200 buyer?)

Doing the HG is easier than doing an engine swap?

Here is another with a leather interior on the bay.
Possibly mushroom though and not grey.

not so sure this will work, spoke to him and he is consulting with the W124 oracle on value, i'll advise once I hear back from him.

i sol done with very good engine and gearbox infact a good runner 70k miles but not leather interior for £160 £200 is a fair price considering the one mentioned earlier on ebay being avail with mot n tax for £150 with mushroom interior.

bare in mind u need to change door cards too

Hmmmm , possibly .

However , if the head has been warped or had tracks eroded by escaping water and consequently needs skimmed , at which point you're as well doing valves , and possibly timing chain too - then you end up with a mini-engine rebuild which will end up costing more than just buying another lump and dropping it in .

The trick is to get a lump which is known to be in good order - but often these can come from accident damaged cars with known history - say someone on here with a good car that gets written off .

The flip side to the above argument of jobs mounting up is that , when doing an engine swap , if it is a manual car , you're as well doing the clutch when you;re at it .

An engine swap is an easy day's diy work with the hire of a crane .

Generally Merc heads don't need skimming, I think I'd rather spend 3 hours doing a HG than a day swapping engine over...

Offer double what the scrap man would pay - about £300 if you're keen to have it.

Remember you have taken the trouble to get some idea of the cars market value. The seller on the other hand------------? The country's garages are littered with broken down cars whose owners are-----"going to something about the car one of these days" or who think " I paid £2,500 for it last year its bound to be worth more than that" So 3 figures
1. What the owner thinks its worth.
2. What its worth to you.
and
3. A realistic market value.

The problem is always getting these figures to coincide.;)

We weighed a Polo in for scrap yesterday ( minus engine and a few small parts 800 odd Kg ) - received the princely sum of £67 ...........

Obviously a Merc would weigh in a bit more .
