I agree there's nothing like a good plate and that's nothing like a good plate ;)

Hahaha - I quite liked it!

The problem with a) having a common first name and b) having a first name for a surname that's also quite common means that getting a good plate will cost thousands.

I saw one that was £39,000! - something like P4 ULY I think it was!

I don't understand the weight of opinion against private regs. I echo Howard that they car look really naff if you put screws in odd places etc, but a nice one can really set off your pride & joy. On the other hand, a new steering wheel just for paddles that you'll rarely (at best) use could be poor value for money.

Not sure actually. I'll look out for it!

Perhaps I mis-read and it was X 12 CMS...

A good plate can look great, but once you get a plate, it's done.
Whereas if you get a functional item, you'll use it always, therefore more worth the money in my opinion.

As for paddles, I've used mine from day one.
Wouldn't make any journey without using them

Pretty much the only time I don't use the buttons is if I'm driving around town. If I'm on a drive to somewhere, the car will always be in 'M' and I'll be using the buttons.

I think I've answered my own question really haven't I? I can't afford a decent number plate and I will get use from the wheel / paddles.

Get a nice watch.

The plate you are looking at is crap. If you have to squint at it or explain it then it's crap. End of.

New steering wheel ... fair enough but the old one still works well.

A decent watch for the same money - will look better anywhere and also keep more value.

Get another watch then .... a vintage one perhaps

Want a bet ?

I bought a 1961 Tudor Rolex Oyster Elegante from eBay for just over £50. Service and mainspring replacement for £190 and it's worth around £1000 according to my watchmaker.

Looks fabulous too and is older than I am.

That is a frigging bargain! I'm off to eBay. My uncle's brought me a Brietling back from Thailand. It was only £50!!!!!!!

(not sure it's real)

It won't be. Rest assured.

It will be a Bleitling.

So is that a Tudor that looks like a Rolex? Or are Tudor and Rolex the same brand?

By coincidence an article in the YP magazine about timepieces this morning suggests the following are the ones to go for:-
Patek Philippe, Rolex, Cartier, Vacheron,, Constantin and Audemars Piguet, closely followed by Jaeger leCoultre, Longines and Omega.

The first million pound watch was gents 18carat gold Patek Philippe dated 1922.

There is a watch sale at Bonhams on Tuesday Sept 11th, prices from £300 to £5000

It's a Tudor watch internally (using a 21 jewel ETA movement) and uses the Rolex Elegante case.

There was a co-existance of brand identities within the same 'group' until the 1990s when there was a clear cleaving of the brand identities.

I have a plate, but only because I got given it by a client once as a 'bonus' and got bored of putting it on retention every year. It is now on the SWMBO's mini.

My thoughts on them are that they are, I suppose, cool enough but using them to disguise the age of your car suggests that it is the most important thing in the world to you which I find a bit strange.

Unless they mean something (sentimentally - a friend of mine has his late father's one on his car....nothing resembling his name, but he likes it for its origins) or it is an expensive true show plate (PAUL 1 for example) they are not my cup of tea.....get the wheel. You will enjoy that more and have less hassle when you want to change cars / insure the car / etc.
