Whats the difference between the TDs and CDIs?

It was available only as LHD.

Must've had bad marketing...

The power output wasn't set high enough and it was a special 5 pot engine so was expensive to make.

Now there is a powerful 320CDi I think it could be a go-er.

The problem is that MB don't want the diesels to be known as performance cars otherwise the big petrols are dead in the water.

I suspect that's a W124 TDT so only 136BHp. The W210 is significantly quicker.

I'm a little bemused by Glojo's comments of the 300Turbo being slow. The saloon pulls 0-62 in 8.5s and runs round to 137mph.
The 320 Cdi is about 8s and 145mph.

It takes more work to extract the performance as it happens higher up the rev band but when on song it can move pretty well for a barge.

This is the earlier 197Bhp 320Cdi not the newer 204/220Bhp version.
Fair comment and yes the figures I supplied were for the very earliest 320CDI. I thought it unfair to quote figures for the 211 in-line and V6 engines.

Totally agree about your comments regarding a diesel AMG. Just look at the Brabus conversions.

John

Ask Brian about a big diesel also being "dead in the water".....lol

I was talking to our local dealer principle and he said that the tie in with Brabus is for diesel engines only - AMG for petrol, Brabus for diesel.

That could be dangerous for AMG long term.

You really must not like Diesels not to buy one these days.

I have a friend with a 320 CDI , New Turbo /Alternator/Injectors all in the space of 6 months only 80000 miles. I had a e300 TD Estate with a re chip did 270000 miles fantastic car no real probs apart from pump seals which is normal causing long start ups . used no oil between services 10000 miles , Rust was a problem as with them all , Economy not good avg over 200000 miles 28 mpg

Regards Humbley PS have seen 145 mph in germany !

just how loud are these 320 CDI's supposed to be

I sat in a couple of 100k milers yesterday, and was a bit disappointed to hear a fair bit of diesel rumble in the cabin. Are they quieter at speed? ( I didn't get the chance to drive one)

Whats so strange is that they are very quite at speed. I dont understand why really as I am not technical enough but my E270 W211 is slightly noisy upto 30mph but after that the engine noise vanishes completely (just like a petrol engine)

I dont think that there is that much wind noise in the w211 that it could block the noise of the engine. What intrigues me is that the engine running at 2.5k RPM is pretty loud (As compared to petrol) when accelerating from stationary then the same engine running at the same rpm at 80-90 on a very quite smooth road and no wind noise. Just a light humm unlike the low speed when you could actually hear the soft running of the pistons.

At 50+, its very impressive. Below 30, you feel you are driving a diesel. Dont know how different is the 320 CDI as compared to 270 CDI.

My Vito has the same V6 CDI, but presumably less sound insulation than the saloons. Under acceleration (esp. at low speeds) you can hear it, but cruising at 'motorway speed' it's virtually silent. Pretty impressive, doubly so for a van!

We also have an Audi 4-cyl TDi - goes well (110 bhp), but sounds like a tractor in comparison.

:p

My Audi went well but sounded like a bag of spanners when you booted it. Thought all Audis were like it- But one knackered turbo later, obviously not!
