2001 CL600 (W215)
18 months ago I bought a 2001 CL600 (W215), after deciding this was the ultimate 2 door luxury car on the market. My dilemma now is this:

Do I spend fortunes in the dealership keeping this in good condition, making expensive repairs as parts age and electronics retire, or

Do I start looking to save that money and buy a newer version?

At first the obvious choice may be to spend the money on a newer car; however, I much prefer the old W215 styling to the updated W216 with its angry looking headlamps. On the other hand, whilst I would love to keep my old W215 in great nick long enough for it to become a classic, I will never be able to add new toys such as night vision, and will have to stick with an out-dated SatNav system and the like.

At the moment I think my compromise may be to upgrade to a 2003-2006 W215, keeping the old body styling, but with a slight update to the interior gadgetry. Is there much difference between the 2001 and 2003 versions? And what would you do??

Go for the CL65 AMG.. its the "ultimate 2 door 4 seater" In my opinion.

You can pick one up for around £28k now and it has 612bhp ;)

Thanks, you may be right - I am keen to stay with the super smooth V12, and 612 bhp? ouch...:D

Get a facelift cl600, aren't they biturbo ? maybe with an AMG bodykit. Will look lovely for a while yet:rock:

depends how much money youve got, if you buy a 2003 or above one, more things could break so you would be more out of pocket!

If you buy a very new one itd at least possibly have a warranty?

Keep the one you have and you just have to pay to maintain it, nothing extra?

depends if you have better things to spend the money on or not!

Personally If i had the money, id upgrade my cl 55amg to the 55k amg, I love the noise that supercharger makes!

Nothing(other than finances?)stopping you from getting a supercharger fitted on your cl55amg:)

would I not be looking at ALOT of money to do that though?

parts, labour, ECU, anything else, and then fueling the thing, its bad enough now!!!!?

I mean I have been looking and you can get a 55k for around £15k now, and that would come with the upgraded interior/electronics, possibly suspension & brakes?..... very tempting!.... I am meant to be saving to buy a house though, I think my mrs would kill me LOL!

Paying to maintain the one I have isn't as cheap as it sounds - if I want to keep it fully functioning without letting it decay, I will inevitibly be paying for a new pump here, a new lead there a couple of times a year - although I am not neccessarily looking to make the best value decision, as to own a car like this is asking to spend some luxury £s.

Maybe I will look into getting a recent (2006ish) W215

An update, for those of you who are interested:

Showed a couple of 2004 CL65 AMGs and CL600s to the Mrs, who commented that there are exactly the same as the one I have now. She couldn't see why a couple of turbochargers and an age gap of 3 years increases the price 4-fold, by £20 grand - which seems fair comment really!

yeah fair enough i spose, but what would you like to buy? I personally agree, dont change a Cl600 for a CL600 but do get yourself a CL65 if you dont want to change shape, if you want to change shape even the CL500 has more power than your V12

This is exactly what I did!

Beautiful car, the 2004 facelift model has plenty of toys inside that you're yet to find as standard in new cars (TV, MP3 CD, Distronic and all the usual luxuries...)

And the engine? 0-60 as soon as you realise you've hit the accelerator - huge.

What did you get and how much did you pay, if that's not too rude? Mine was for sale but have been messed around a bit by people who needed to sell their own car first. I may put mine up again soon so would be interested
