A friend of mine is going to replace his old c180 in june/july , and has a budget of £6k . A drop in the ocean for you C63 owners , but for him this will be a major expenditure . As my Merc is purely for pleasure , my paramaters are somewhat different to his , so we are trying to sort out the most appropriate vehicle for him . It needs to be reliable , have reasonable economy , and as good a spec for the money . Preference for 4 door, and leather/wood interior . Asking a lot in this price range perhaps , and my initial thoughts are 03/04 plate C220 CDI . However , I cannot claim to be an expert on anything but the bleeding obvious , so thought I would throw this into the forum for some guidance. Any advice on years/models to avoid would also be appreciated.

Unfortunately a V8 R129 is not on his horizon for obvious reasons, but if he could cope with the fuel consumption and two seat configuration, the reliability and lack of depreciation should make it an option.

A manual A class would tick all the boxes you mention.

Don't instantly discount the idea until you/he has sat in or driven one.

They do offer allot for your cash and are BIG inside.

You could get into a W211 for that sort of money, that is where I would be putting my money.

The 211 route will be an early car. Some electrics are iffy, and to be on the look out for the ever mentioned valeo radiator. A 203 the main issues are rust, and wheel alignment.

I actually agree if running costs etc are an issue them a new shape A class would be pretty good.

Probably the newest car amongst the Mercs he could afford, cheaper tax, good fuel, they would have already lost a lot so depreciation leveling off. Also probably the least miles.

W211 would be big miles and an early one, also the C class to be honest.

Try one...especially in Avant guard spec such as below, 60mpg and nippy also :)

Motorline Direct Ltd : MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A180 CDI AVANTGARDE SE

or even nippier

Derby Trade Cars Ltd : MERCEDES-BENZ A CLASS A200 TURBO 3DR +

A little more both of these but it was only a quick look... Autotrader will have a lot I guess. Just try and miss the 'classic' spec as steel wheels and bit low on toys inside.

Did I post this thread on the wrong website ? was hoping for a bit more feedback . Come on guys, some of you must be on a similar budget ?:wallbash:

I had a similar budget, a little more actually - and I bagged a late 53 plate W211 E270 CDI Avantgarde with Comand, heated front seats, parktronic, Factory 18" AMG alloys, FULL Mercedes History (with invoices etc) and a genuine 84k miles.

So, if you are looking for a W211, they are not all leggy early models if you look hard and are prepared to travel like I did (I live near Glasgow, the car came from Kent)

Day one pic of mine after a bucket of water thrown over it.

I am sure you will get a lot more A class for the money than B, C etc. Is a Smart way of the mark?

How about an absolute minter of a W or C124? You see them at specialist dealers advertised on the web or in Mercedes Enthusiast for this kind of money, less even and have a few grand in your pocket for repair budget/running costs/nice holiday :D

So true !!!!

Buy the best, low mileage with full service history 124 that you can find.
It will keep it's value and run on long after anything made past 1996 will...

I bought a 45K mile, one owner 1994 A124...paid a good bit !!
Owners of new Bentley's look at it..

Much more elegant look, design yet to be compromised :thumb:
