The dealer uses Castrol Magnatec on our E220 CDI.

I would go for a fully synthetic 5w-40 or if you really want to save a few pennies you could get away with a semi synthetic 10w-40.

Any good brand will be OK, you dont have to go for the big names you just pay for the name and advertising, but make sure it is a reasonable brand.

Any good injector cleaner either added to the fuel tank or used in the fuel filter, do not use diesel tonics or oil additives, waste of money.

I use Millers semi synthetic, £17 per 5 ltr. Have had no problems with it so far. The oil seems to stay cleaner, it may just be me though.

Or if you want to use Mobil 1 Diesel, just pop over to Calais & buy 4 litres for under €30 (about £20) in the supermarket.

This is interesting.

In my V6 Calibra I use the Vauxhall semi-synthetic 10w40 oil that I can get through Trade Club. I had more or less dismissed using it in my diesel.

Problem is... I can get the Vauxhall oil for about £5 per 5 litre can... ;)

I take it MB use full synthetic in diesels?

Ian.

with regards to engine oil what matters is the spec and if it is upto merc benz 229.1 and 229.3 which means it is tested and approved

The proper spec for your car is 15W40 to MB 228.3 spec. This doesn't need to be fully synth but given the longer drain interval it is a good idea.
Use a diesel specific oil like Millers XFD as it will have better soot dispersants.
Not all MB dealers use full synth and often offer Mobil 1 as an option. My own service book has Castrol Magnatec listed which is frankly poor and no dealer uses a diesel specific oil.

Ps. Newer oil specs have more to do with reducing engine friction than protection. This is not necessarily a good thing if the final viscosity index is lowered.
