Good morning all. I'm thinking of buying my son an onboard video camera setup for his car, and I get the impression there are a fair few in this forum who already have one. Does anyone have any recommendations, for or against, regarding particular brands and models?

Depends what you want it for and what you want it to capture, If you want it to capture number plates then the cheap ebay ones won't do that, also you want something that has an internal battery so that in the event of a collision and it loses power you still have the footage captured.

THIS seems to be getting good reviews on various forums and overlays GPS data on Google maps which is nice also the Mio MiVue brand seem to be geting good press. I eventually went for 2 x bullet cams front and rear linked to a SSD under the boot floor, £365 in bits and a pain in the ar*e to fit. :D

Thank you, gentlemen. Interesting link, evdok; to buy a cheapie, or spend more and get a bit better quality? I think I might go for the last-mentioned.

Just a thought

If your son has a smart phone... is there an App for this?
If he has an Android phone then there is AutoGard that he could take a look at. They reviewd it on Fifth Gear and it wasn't the best, but it's free.

Please tell more about the SSD option. I've been researching this for several months and can only find quite expensive commerical recorders or ones that take an SD card. I've not been able to find anything that take a big SSD disc.

I had it put together by a local guy that works for Ford Special vehicles, its basically a cheap version of what's used on traffic cars but with a lot less functionality and lower spec cameras. The only problem is if I want to view the footage I have to pull the drive and plug it into my computer, on the more sophisticated ones they have the ability to download to an SD card. My drive is not that big 64 Gb I think. Quality is crystal clear even when you manipulate the image to view the vehicles number plates in the distance they are perfect this is something you cant do with the cheap ebay ones unless the vehicle is bang in front of you they wont read the plate. I used a couple of mid range Sony cameras.

Does he do comission jobs or even better, have plans available for self consrtuct?

I really don't want or need something with a giant sticker on the front screen and a playback monitor, just something that will record in very high quality and store it somewhere out of the way. I can get the cameras (mate does high end CCTV) but even via the professional suppliers there's nothing that hits the spot for recording. If only Heathkit hadn't bit the dust!

p.s. I too am a resident of God's own county.
