Hello knowledgeable types.

I have recently taken ownership of the above car - very happy with it. However, I need to replace the rear brake pads and disks. The car just failed its MOT because of this.

Looking at the many parts suppliers on-line, I'm getting all kinds of different sizes and types thrown at me. Some vented, some drilled, some solid 300/320 mm. The MOT place said "according to 'the computer' because the fronts are drilled, the rears must be 320mm - and I'll do them for £540 and the pads for £146". Needless to say, I declined.

Online prices for Brembo / Bosch are around £36 per disc and a set of pads is similar.

An idea what is actually required?

Many thanks.

Measure what you’ve got and buy accordingly?

Ring MB Newcastle , get a quote , you buy online , they will list the items you need on their website if they don’t already appear on it. Their prices are very competitive and if you give them your VIN No you will get the correct parts ,

Hi Fred and welcome . Use your VIN for discs and pads , buy Brembo if you can (OEM stuff) but to honest with you just about any reputable manufactures parts will fit the bill .

Cross drilled discs on the rear ? waste of money on almost all road cars , the rears will be vented anyway.

13 year old car ? Budget for some parking brake shoes and spring/fitting kit (cheap) while you are at it.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

What do they actually say is wrong with the discs.?
If it is simply surface corrosion, there is a good chance you could simply have your discs skimmed. That way you can be assured of retaining the OEM spec' as well as perhaps some of your wallet's contents.

I have all the parts in stock ready to do a rear brake overhaul on my CLK. I have gone for all Brembo disc/pads and park brake linings with new springs/fitting kits and adjusters Etc I opted for the enhanced Brembo stuff. coated discs and top grade pads, more money but hey ho and on we go.

I notice that the OP says "recently took ownership of car", bought privately then? If from a dealer then should have insisted on MOT carried out prior to purchase. If private buy then did you look closely at all brake pads/discs before purchase? Brakes too important to take for granted.

Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated.

I'll give MB Newcastle a call tomorrow 👍

There's 300x 22 vented

300 x 10 solid

Or

320 x 24 vented

Most common are the 300 x 22 £80 a pair .

Fronts can be 322 or 295

Have you bought new disc backing plates ? just in case you encounter this..

Not a hope in hell of keeping the brake shoes in place once this hole (one of 4) has rotted out . It's a common fault all part of the poor design of the parking brake. Replacing the plates is usually a job requiring the hubs to be removed.

The plates can be cut to fit but (on 203 C class at least) you can not actually remove any of the plate as it needs these important holes to remain and has raised edges pressed into it that the shoes locate on, they too have to remain.

Going into this job eyes wide open and prepared is the only way to guarantee success . The cover plates are quite cheap and depending how much time you have you can strip it all down to inspect them before ordering new ones . You do not mention mileage only the age of the car , 13 years . This photo is of my 16 year old C class and they were the original MB ones so you might be lucky. But they will need replacing sooner or later.

TOP TIP ! Before installing the new brake shoes put a bevel/chamfer on one edge of each shoe as it will help enormously when you try to push the new disc over them.

PS . Don't forget to take off ALL of the adjustment on the cable splitter under the rear seat . If you are lucky (like me) you will have an inspection hatch accessible from inside the car under the rear seat. If you are not so lucky (depending on the design on your car, it might have changed) you will have to struggle to get to it above the main drive shaft, or you might even have to drop the drive shaft down to get good access to it.

PPS . I gave my new cover plates 4 layers of clear coat before fitting in the hope of offering them a bit more rust protection . Let us know how you get on 👍

Very few places skim discs because they are cheap to buy.

Skimming is just a stop gap. Replace with new discs and pads.

Yep.

New disks, pads and sensor ordered; all Brembo.

I purchased them from EuroParts as they were the second cheapest (by only a few £), but I can collect them on Wednesday.

Right.

New parts are here, wheel off, caliper off, disk stuck. Bugger.

Any tips for removing a stuck disk?

I don't know who maintained the car previously, but the caliper was bone dry with lots of rust; no sign of any grease. The pins were also dry which explains why the pad wear was very uneven - meaning the inside pad was not worn at all.

Good god ,what a mess . !!! To remove the disc use a 4 lb hammer hit in a clockwise direction, then from the rear . It'll pop off eventually.

If they're the rears , you'd need to back off the handbrake shoes fully, to get the disc off ... You may still need the hammer though. 👍

yep, it’s going to need a beating - I have a big soft faced mallet for this very job. I’m sure you know this already but when you’ve got the disc off, give the hub face a really good clean and get some anti-seize paste on when reassembling.

I’ve just bought discs and pads (Brembo) for the front of my 2012 C350. I encountered the same issue with lots of alternative suggestions of what I needed. Even the Mercedes online In Edinburgh suggested what I’m sure are the wrong ones as genuine Mercedes parts!

I say that I’m sure places tried to sell me the wrong ones, because I’ve received the ones I eventually ordered but haven’t got round to fitting them yet. They just look right against what’s there already.

I wish there was a way to check online against VIN for correct part numbers. Or is there?

Try using brakes international website to cross reference against your reg number . It's usually the AMG sports option that determines which you need tbh.

I used this place to search by VIN:

All done now thanks 👍

And yes, the hub face was scrubbed and lubed.
