Have decided to get a TomTom for my Easter road trip in France, and the Alps etc.

Plan is to avoid motorways.

Am not sure which is better: (1) TomTom One Europe v4 or (2) TomTom One Europe XL v2

Is the navigation capabilities of v4 better (noticeably) than v2? I like the idea of XL (widescreen).

Ideally, would like a TomTom One Europe XL v4, but this does not seem to exist.

Cheapest place to buy?

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

If you plan on also driving around London I can recommend one with Traffic and IQ routes, something like the 530T.

The widescreens look nice, but don't offer more functionality, so buy what you can afford.

Hantech look to be competitive on price.

i'd also consider Garmin.

We have both and i prefer the garmin. TomTom has all the user functionailty like voices etc etc, but the garman strikes me as more of a professional "tool" rather than a TomTom plaything. all IMHO

Definatly get a 16:9 version

One advantage of the Garmin is that they have a beanbag based mount which everyone who has one raves about. Think it's £20 in Halfords.

I have always used Tomtom either in PDA's, phones or actaull sat nav units.

I do like the way TT operates over my dads Garmin but I guess like anything you get use to them?

Wife has TT one Europe, I wanted to get the widescreen as I liked the big screen but as she said its smaller in normal form to put in her bag.

We used it from Here to Annecy and around and about when there. Worked very well and never had a problem. Cheap now also.

Updated it with fixed cameras etc off pocket GPS

thanks for the replies.

I like the bean bag mount idea.

yeah a good idea for cars like the picasso that the screen is too far away from the drivers seat to mount or reach the satnav

Think there has only been the original XL and this new XL v2 - so that's why it's v2 and not v4 (of which there have been 4 versions of the One). So they are probably the same, just the XL having the widescreen.

I have the 720, but only extra features it offers is mp3 playback, bluetooth handsfree and RF modulator which I don't have need for anymore.

Those beanbag things look interesting, not come across them before - I guess the purpose is so that it just sits on the dashboard rather than sucking onto the windscreen? Can't believe it won't slide about!

Got one last week from Halfrauds, £15 IIRC. It's possibly a bit big for the car but absolutely A1 for my Renault Master.

The Garmin one is nothing short of astonishing in use - don't know about any others.

It's a shame the mountings on the back aren't standard - even the balls of joints are different sizes - so you can't interchange Garmin and TomTom stuff.

Just ordered TomTom XL V2 Europe for £130 delivered from Amazon. Great price!

Bean bag mounts don't slide at all. I got the idea from our local police force whoose traffic cars use them, so they must take some forces in the nature of a pusuit. I have deliberately tried to dislodge mine from the dash by cornering at some insane speeds and by having the car on opposite lock ( on private facilities of course ;)) and it does not move, it is rock solid. Loads better than vent mount or windscreen mounts, the

Loads better than vent mount or windscreen mounts, the TT one is good as if you swap units you simply by another adaptor plate at £2.99 bargain :)

Sounds ace, will invest in one ASAP. :)
