Minor correction John. The DVD player is in the dashboard COMAND unit. It's the navigation DVD that's in the boot.
Don't accept any Nav DVD earlier than 5.1. That's the first one to reliably work with traffic messages in the UK.

Hopefully they understand what I meant, particularly as we are only discussing the navigation DVD?? DVD = DVD player? 
I fully accept the DVD player for music and films is fitted into the COMAND, but what should we call the thing in the boot that accepts and 'plays' the navigation DVD? (and only the navigation DVD)

It should have version 6.0 this was released in January.
I understand Version 7.0 came out a few weeks ago.

You need to check the build date for your car:
At worst 5.1 which was April last year
Version 6.0 Jan/Feb 2007
Current 7.0 out (in Germany at least) August '07
I would push for 6.0 (& they better have a good excuse for you if they try to push 5.1 on you as the previous owner would almost certainly had 6.0)

They are both DVD players, the difference is the headunit has the ability to decode movie DVDs as well as read data

My dad picked his CLS up from Stuttgart in July and got version 7.0. The chap said it had just come out so version 6.0 sounds about right.
