Imagine a Gullwing with the 6.3 litre AMG lump on a chassis which really handles!

Actually - maybe it would have to be a straight six.....

I'd like to see the 680bhp 6.0 V12 Bi-turbo engine in a merc chassis that can really handle:devil: . If they made something like that... without assistance from any other 2nd party (mclaren or the likes), then it would give bmw fans nothing to shout about :D .

Sometimes i think mercedes use 'AMG', 'Mclaren' and other things as more of a marketing gimic then anything else really...

mmmmm how much would I get for my girlfriend???

Retro cars always seem like good ideas... until they get to the showrooms. Despite the events of the last few months, the makers usually do a pretty good job of thinking up what we want (with some spectacular exceptions, of course).

Depends on what they are aiming. I think having a particular car in mind would be a mistake. The Jaguar S-type was clearly trying to recreate the Mk2 look, and did not really pull it off. The Nissan Figaro was a great, quirky-looking retro thing, which did not make me think of any one classic car in particular, but still resembled something from another era. Maybe they could do something like that, based on a Smart car?

still like the gullwing idea a wee bit more ;)

Did you get our Plymouth (Dodge) PT Cruiser over there? It's done pretty well. The Chevrolet attempt at it, not so much

Yes i agree, a Gullwing - modern would be really cool.

Buying a retro styled car is like wearing a knock off Rolex, 99% of the time you could buy a mint and perfectly usable genuine classic for less money and it wont depreciate. A Merc specialist near me sold a W114 280ce in almost as new condition, with bundles of history and under 60,000 miles on it for £7000. Anyone who has ever driven a good one will tell you they are perfectly capable of being driven in modern traffic without stress, aside from the lack of ABS and airbags and higher fuel consumption I cant see why you'd want to pay whatever the premium would be for something that just looked old and lost money hand over fist as you drove it.

Mainly because people buy new cars for reasons other than genuine enthusiasm. New cars are status symbols, either to impress others or their new owners.
No matter how hard you try, you'll rarely (if ever) convince a person who usually buys new or nearly-new cars that old cars are easy to live with.

More fool them, I say, it keeps the W201s and W124s of this world in the bargain basement.
I adore the W114 btw, the public perception (mine included until not so long ago) is that they are very heavy, very thirsty and cost a small fortune to keep looking pretty. I'd think twice about buying one if I couldn't garage it.

Mine lives on the street, at 1400kgs its lighter than most modern cars its size and 180bhp means it will keep up just fine (130mph if you really want it to) It IS thirsty compared to something similar these days, but then the boot is easily big enough for an LPG tank to get lost in. It handles and stops great although it does lean into corners a fair bit. Make sure it dont leak and keep it clean and maybe get it covered in proper underseal and no reason it wont survive the winter.

A Pagoda would be a cheaper more affordable choice. Retaining as much of the looks of the original design as current legislation would allow.

Nice......................
