....why? Apart from watching DVDs and wider spreadsheets on screen?

Just being curious not critical of those who have them.

The resolution on mine is 1920x1200, it doesn't just stretch the standard resolution. It just means you can fit lots on the screen!

I think the main selling point is having two pages side by side on the screen.

So widescreen DVD movies have nothing in this equation! other than the working aspect of course (pun not intended).

Most of the laptops are not 16:9, so the aspect ratio is out of whack anyway....

I'm guessing then that there's no great benefit for standard use (basic Office, web, e-mail and games)?

Hi,
I am working on a Toshiba with a 17" screen at the moment. I have Opera running so I have access to web and my mail in one panel and I also have Gaim messenger open and have space for more things if I want them...
but the trade off is the fact that I need a car to carry the bloody thing :D
the other thing to remember is that just coz` the screen is large it does not follow that dvds will play that big ;)

Widescreen tvs ain't 16:9 either. If only someone would come up with a "standard" widescreen ratio then everyone would know what sizes to make stuff! ;)

I thought the same until I got a widescreen Vaio laptop (I don't use the word notebook because they're much too big to be called that!) last week. Amazing how much more useful the wider screen is, for so many things. Spreadsheets are much easier, net viewing is much better, esp where people post photos that you would normally have to scroll across for and loads of other things including, as someone mentioned, having two windows open side by side. Widescreen DVDs look great as well, though I'd rather watch them on the telly anyway. The surprise has been how many games I own have a widescreen setting and how much better they are to use as well.

I'm typing this on my work laptop, which is a normal screen, and it feels very restrictive

I've never understood why people would buy widescreen TV's - whenever you see anything on in the TV shops either the screen is stretched out or more commonly its cut off at top and bottom compared with 4:3 screens around (though they are getting rare  )

Where have you been? :D

Most new programs on digital tv are broadcast in W/S as are all DVDs

Hi Aswall ;)

Dark ages it seems :p

I have never seen a DVD, ever.

Progs I watch on TV are either golf on
Sky or 'normal' tv progs eg comedy etc

Am I missing out ? :)
