Will Mercedes be worried

There seems to be as much design finesse in that as in the Cayenne.

Mind you, some people like that too....

I like it! Mind you not so keen on it in that colour, come to that I don't like any car in that colour.

My mistake, I think that's the marginally improved facelift one ... did you like the original version too?!

I like Porsche but i think they stuck with the same pudding bowl and scissors. One size fits all

Porsche sports cars are excellent and among the best in their class. The 911 is and always will be a legend.

The Cayenne is an excellent example of the power of a brand. If the Cayenne still looked liked a Cayenne but was made by Daewoo, I very much doubt it would have sold.

True for the old 911s.

New 911s are no doubt excellent cars but don't seem quite
so special any more.

First time I saw a Cayenne I didn't realise it was a Porsche
and thought it was some rather poorly styled 4x4 from a
new entrant from Korea or China.

I miss the 928 - there don't seem to be many left on the
roads and it seems to be almost forgotten.

Oh, there's still a fair few around. Porsche purists don't like them (because the engine's in the wrong place). S4's and GTS's are still sought after, and the reason you don't see too many about is that they're still fairly pricey - for a ten year old car.

A real tour de force by Porsche, in my opinion, and I do believe that the greastest obstacle Porsche faced in making the 928 credible was the 911. This problem still exists, which is why the Cayenne looks like a 911 for fat blokes, and the Panamera looks like a 911 for, well, blind blokes if the spy shots are anything to go by...

And the Boxster doesn't know which way to go ;) - But I admit it's a great car in its own right

The first pic with the big bumper air scoops is the turbo, the second pic is the V6, if I'm not much mistaken.

Going back on thread, I don't think the Panamera will steal sales form the CLS. It's going to be a lot more expensive, I would guess prices will start at £65k?. And it's a long way off. When I was at the Porsche plant in Leipzig couple of weeks ago, they were just starting the earthworks in readiness for the foundations of the extension to the factory where the Panamera will be built.

They also had the carbon-fibre tub of the Carrera GT there, which was fascinating. And, as ugly as the Cayenne undoubtedly is, it was fun tearing round the factory off-road course in one!

I've never really seen the ugliness of the Cayenne. It is brutish looking IMHO - if I can describe a car as such - but I wouldn't say ugly. The interior is fantastic though.

Just a shame Porsche didn't do a diesel. If they can pinch a V6 from VW then couldn't they have pinched the V10 diesel too? Of course VW are soon replacing the V10 with a smaller capacity V8 with equivalent power, but improved economy. I think Porsche commented at launch that diesel didn't fit their brand identity at that time - I suspect they'll porbably go hybrid before they go diesel. Doesn't seem to have affected sales a great deal though.

I think it's the headlights that have been least successful and possibly the culprit for those claiming it's fallen out of the ugly tree, as they are so close to that of the 911 (996), but obviously on a completely different kind of vehicle. Of course the Touareg is pretty much the same car as the Cayenne, and it too has headlights that are reminiscent of it's stablemates - the previous generation Passat, and the Phaeton to some degree.

I think the difference is that the Touareg lights have the proportion of a Foxes Glacier Mint, and make it look aircraft-carrier wide (and therefore tough). Big-in-every dimension Cayenne lamps make it look like a fat 911!! There's probably a bigger conceptual difference between the 911 and Cayenne, than the Passat and Touareg too.

Just goes to show though that a brand stretches much more easily than styling!!

I can't believe the Panamera will start at £65k though, as it's touted by the motoring press to be based on Cayenne under-pinnings, including the VW-sourced V6.

If the current generation Cayenne starts at £35,560 for the V6 and £44,900 for the N/A V8, I can't imagine the equivalent Panamera will be too much more even with a premium and a couple of years of inflation added. Broadly similar to the ML.

Equivalent engined CLS are £43,440 for the V6 and £53,240 for the V8, so I suspect the Porsched will be broadly similar, maybe £45k start.

PS At risk of going off topic, I reckon the Cayenne is a bargain in base trim!! Very cheap for a new Porsche.

I think the Touareg is a good-looking car (for an SUV ;)) ... shame Porsche tried so hard to put their own 'brand identity' on the Cayenne.

well , had it not for me being 24 and not 25 for insurance purposes ...

i would be the current owner of a Cayenne 4.5 V8 S

Nuff said....

They did. But perhaps not quite what you had in mind:D

I still can't shake the feeling that a Porsche off roader (and I don't mean rally car) is as faintly ridiculous as a Land Rover sports car.
