How easy is it to remove & check the rocker switch that selects winter mode on the auto box? This is for my '97 R129, but I guess other MBs of similar vintage will be the same.

I have an intermittent problem with it setting off in 2nd gear (just like it's in winter mode), would like to rule out the switch before worrying about the gearbox itself!

I had an ATF replacement done this morning "just in case", and it did it driving back from the dealership (having been perfect for the last couple of weeks!). Playing around in a big car park it was consistently starting off in 2nd (even with 1st selected manually) for a couple of minutes, then it was fine again! Operating the winter/standard rocker switch didn't appear to do anything. I'm wondering if there's a loose wire or connection that's being affected by the gear lever moving.

Any other suggestions welcome; apart from this everything seems fine ... it still shifts smoothly and quietly. Nothing has been done to the centre console since I replaced the cassette storage 12+ months ago.

Thanks in advance!

S16/10 is responsible for what gear choice you've made - the lever and W/S switch are both connected to it.
